In high school hockey Saturday…
• Calumet defeated Detroit Country Day 6-4.
Pool play continued at the Frozen Cup tournament in Baraga County Saturday…
• In the Squirt division, Dollar Bay defeated Fine Line Tire 9-6. OK Industrial shut down Insight Eye Care 8-2, and then defeated the Keweenaw Bay Cougars 7-6. Fine Line Tire downed Insight Eye Care 5-2. There are two pool games remaining this morning, and the championship match will be played this afternoon at 1:15 at Meadowbrook Arena.
• In the Peewee division, the Green Bay Bobcats defeated Credit Services 9-4, then blanked Royale, Inc. 6-0. Royale, Inc. downed Keweenaw/Iron River 7-1, and Credit Services skated past Keweenaw/Iron River 9-3. The Bobcats and Royale, Inc. will play for the title this morning at 9:30 at Meadowbrook Arena.
• In the Bantam Division, G and S Roofing defeated Pat’s Foods 2-1, and then beat T and H Tollefson Logging 4-2. Calumet Auto Pro shut out the Eagle Mine Junior Wildcats 1-0, then edged American Forest Management 5-3. American Forest management defeated T and H Tollefson Logging 6-2, and Pat’s Foods downed the Eagle Mine Junior Wildcats 4-1. T and H Tollefson Logging and American Forest Management will play in the fifth place consolation game this morning at 10:30 at the Baraga Ice Rink. Pat’s Foods and the Eagle Mine Junior Wildcats will play for third place at 10:30 at Meadowbrook Arena. G and S Roofing and Calumet Auto Pro will meet for the title at noon at Meadowbrook Arena.

In the first two of this season’s basketball battles of the bay between L’Anse and Baraga Saturday…
• The Vikings girls stopped the Purple Hornets 51-26.
• The Purple Hornets boys overcame the Vikings 54-38.
In high school swimming, results from Houghton’s triangular with Sault Ste. Marie at Marquette were not reported.
College Basketball
The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team couldn’t hold a halftime lead, and lost at second-ranked Drury 79-62 Saturday evening. Ellie Mackay scored 18 for the Huskies. Tech plays at Lindenwood University in Saint Charles, Missouri, today.
The Northern Michigan University women’s basketball game at Illinois-Springfield schedule for Saturday was canceled. The Wildcats have called off all of the men’s and women’s contests set for the rest of December because of illness.
Both Finlandia teams will face Martin Luther College today. The games will be played in Wisconsin Dells.
College Football
Ferris State University won its first NCAA Division II Football Championship Saturday night, blowing out Valdosta State 58-17. The Bulldogs attempted only six passes in the game, while rushing for 459 yards.
GLHL
The Calumet Wolverines lost to the Marquette Mutineers 8-5 Saturday night.
NHL
Dylan Larkin finally notched his first NHL hat trick, as the Detroit Red Wings downed the New Jersey Devils 5-2 Saturday night. Tyler Bertuzzi scored the Wings’ other two goals. Thomas Greiss made 31 saves.
Monday’s Wings’ game against Colorado has been postponed because of COVID-19 issues with the Avalanche. The Calgary Flames and Florida Panthers are also off the ice, at least through Christmas.
Detroit is facing its own COVID-19 problems. Givani Smith, Carter Rowney and Alex Nedeljkovic have been added to the COVID list. Calvin Pickard was called up from Grand Rapids to back up Greiss in last night’s game. Head coach Jeff Blashill and assistant coach Alex Tanguay have also been sidelined.
A second former Michigan Tech hockey player had to be carried off the ice on a stretcher during an NHL game. Tanner Kero of the Dallas Stars was slammed into the boards by Brett Connolly of the Chicago Blackhawks Saturday night. Kero was knocked out, and laid motionless on the ice for several minutes. He came to, and was described as conscious and responsive as he was taken to a hospital for evaluation. Connolly was ejected from the game.
Less than two weeks ago, former Husky Jujhar Khaira, who, ironically, plays for the Blackhawks, spent the night in a hospital after being knocked cold in a game against the New York Rangers. Khaira remains in concussion protocol, but could return this week.
NBA
The Detroit Pistons’ losing streak reached 14 games Saturday afternoon, with a 116-107 loss to the Houston Rockets. Saddiq Bey led Detroit with 23 points, and Cade Cunningham added 21.
Ironically, the Rockets hold the record for the NBA’s longest losing streak – 15 games, set early last season. Detroit will try to avoid matching that mark when they host the Miami Heat this evening.
NFL
Saturday…
• The scheduled game between the Las Vegas Raiders and the Cleveland Browns was been postponed because of COVID-19 issues. It will be made up as the first contest in a Monday night doubleheader.
• The Indianapolis Colts held off the New England Patriots 27-17.
Today…
• The Detroit Lions welcome the Arizona Cardinals for a 1:00 game. Hear the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift.
• The Green Bay Packers visit the Baltimore Ravens for a 4:05 contest. A win by Green Bay would clinch the NFC North Division title.
• The New Orleans Saints visit the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the Sunday night contest. Hear the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift.
Two of today’s NFL games have been postponed. The contests between the Seattle Seahawks and the Los Angeles Rams, and the Washington Football Team and Philadelphia Eagles have been moved to Tuesday because of COVID-19 issues.
