Hornets, Gremlins Earn Volleyball Wins – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School
In high school volleyball yesterday…
– L’Anse got past Lake Linden-Hubbell 3-2. The Lakes took the first two sets, 25-19 and 25-16. L’Anse then swept the final three sets, 25-16, 25-17, and 15-8.
– Houghton edged Gwinn 3-2.
– Hancock v Chassell – no report.
– Dollar Bay-Tamarack City v Ontonagon – no report.

In volleyball today, Calumet plays at West Iron County.

At the Jeffers invitational cross country meet yesterday at the Kilpela farm…
– Gogebic eked out a narrow team win over Chassell on the boys side. Houghton finished third, followed by Rapid River, Republic-Michigamme, Ironwood, Dollar Bay-Tamarack City, Jeffers, Watersmeet and Ontonagon. The Miners’ Uriah Aili and Devon Byers placed first and second individually.
– Hancock finished one point ahead of Chassell to earn the girls team title. Houghton was third, followed by Calumet and Dollar Bay-Tamarack City. Anabel Needham of the Gremlins took individual honors, followed by Chassell’s Lela Rautiola.

MLB
The Detroit Tigers lost to the Kansas City Royals 6-2 last night. Matthew Boyd survived a five-run third inning to complete six frames, and took the loss. KC’s Jakob Junis pitched a complete game, giving up six hits, including a home run by JaCoby Jones.

That two-game set wraps up this afternoon. Michael Fulmer will start against Danny Duffy. Pregame coverage will begin at 1:50 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Milwaukee Brewers fell behind early, and dropped a 9-7 decision to the Cincinnati Reds last night. Junior Guerra gave up four runs in the first inning, and left as Cincy scored two more in the second. The Crew fought back, and drew to within a run with a four-run seventh powered by a Christian Yelich home run – his second of the game. The Reds responded with two in the bottom of the seventh to seal the win.

That set continues in Cincinnati tonight. Freddy Peralta will pitch against Matt Harvey.

NHL
Detroit Red Wings’ captain Henrik Zetterberg says he won’t be ready for training camp and the start of the season. Zetterberg has been dealing with chronic back issues that could end his career.

NFL
On Monday, the Detroit Lions signed veteran defensive end Robert Ayers. He must have looked better from a distance than he did up close. After one practice, they cut him yesterday.

Finlandia
