MLB

Former Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland is headed to the Baseball Hall of Fame. Leyland was the only candidate advanced yesterday by the contemporary baseball era committee. Leyland got his start as a player, and then a coach, in Detroit’s minor league system. He went on to lead the Pirates to the National League Championship Series three times, and won the World Series with the Marlins in 1997. In 2006, he took over the Tigers, and skippered them to two American League pennants, losing to the Cardinals and the Giants in the World Series.

Detroit’s current manager’s stay in the Motor City has been extended. A.J. Hinch has signed a new contract. Terms have not been released, but Tigers’ president of baseball operations Scott Harris said that Hinch will manage the team “for a long time.”

The Tigers also filled out their coaching staff for the 2024 season. Joey Cora leaves the Mets to become Detroit’s third base coach. Former Mud Hens manager Anthony lapoce will take over as first base coach, Ryan Sienko has been promoted to catching coach, and Lance Zawadzki comes in from the Boston minor league system to take over as assistant major league hitting coach.

The Major League Baseball draft lottery takes place tonight. The Tigers have a 1.6 percent chance of landing the top pick.

Starting pitcher Wade Miley will return to the Brewers next season, on a one-year, $8.5 million deal.

Milwaukee has confirmed the signing of outfielder Jackson Chourio to a 10-year, $82 million contract. Chourio is 19, and has not yet advanced out of the Brewers’ minor league system. He’s regarded as the second-best prospect in baseball.
