Hockey Wins for Kings, Jets – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school hockey Saturday…
– Gabe Coppo’s goal in overtime gave Calumet a 3-2 victory over Cranbrook Kingswood. The Copper Kings took a 2-0 first period lead, with goals by Tanner Rowe and Scott Loukus. The Cranes tied it in the second stanza. A scoreless third period set up Coppo’s winning shot. Sam Kiiskela made 29 saves.
– Jeffers skated past Ashland 6-2. The Jets spotted the Oredockers a 1-0 first period lead, then exploded for four goals in the second period, and added two in the third. Matthew Halonen and Kyler Hillstrom each scored twice for Jeffers. Jackson Rochhi and Jordan Keronen added single tallies. Caden Hillstrom had two assists. Evan Pietila made 30 saves.

Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference

The Michigan Tech men’s basketball team routed Algoma University Saturday 117-60. Kyle Monroe led the Huskies with 30 points.

The Northern Michigan University men’s basketball team lost 80-75 to Ripon College Saturday.

Great Lakes Hockey League

The Calumet Wolverines completed a weekend sweep of the Portage Lake Pioneers with a 4-3 victory Saturday night. Bryan Miller made 38 saves for Calumet.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings’ latest losing streak reached three games Saturday night, as they dropped a 4-1 decision to the Toronto Maple Leafs. Tyler Bertuzzi scored Detroit’s only goal late in the third period. Detroit goalie Jonathan Bernier left the game early after suffering a lower body injury. Calvin Pickard replaced him, and took the loss. Anthony Mantha also left the contest in the closing minutes after hitting his head on the ice.

The Wings host the Arizona Coyotes tonight. Jimmy Howard is expected to return from the injured list to start in goal. Because of NFL football, pregame coverage will begin at 6:40 on KBear 102.3.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons’ losing streak reached four game last night, with a 119-107 loss to the Chicago Bulls. Markieff Morris led Detroit with 23 points. The Pistons again played without Blake Griffin, Derrick Rose, Reggie Jackson and Christian Wood.

The Pistons host the Chicago Bulls tomorrow night.

NFL

In the NFL Saturday, the Texans edged the Buccaneers 23-20, the Bills lost at New England 24-17, and the Rams fell to the 49ers 34-31 on a last-second field goal. L-A’s loss guaranteed a playoff berth for the Minnesota Vikings.

Today, the Detroit Lions visit the Denver Broncos in a 4:00 game. Running back Kerryon Johnson will return to the Detroit lineup, after missing time with a torn meniscus. The Green Bay Packers visit the Minnesota Vikings Monday night. Hear both games on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers have signed added some infield punch and experience by signing first baseman C.J. Cron and second baseman Jonathan Schoop. Both played for the Twins last season. Both signed one-year, $6.1-million deals with Detroit. Cron slugged 25 home runs, and hit .253. Schoop hit .256, with 23 homers. To make room on the roster, Detroit designated infielder Brandon Dixon for assignment.
