High School
In high school hockey last night…
• Escanaba hung with Houghton early, but the Gremlins broke open a 3-3 game with five straight goals, and claimed an 8-3 victory. Tedd Halonen scored twice and Nathan Erva had a goal and three assists for the Gremlins, who outshot the Eskymoes 40-12.
• Calumet blanked Negaunee 8-0 in a game that ended early in the third period because of the mercy rule. Dean Loukus led the Copper Kings with two goals and three assists. Jackson Rilei, Seth Coppo, Dan Loukus, Carson Kariniemi, Noah Jukuri and Paul Sturos also found the net. Jack Helminen had to make just two saves to get the shutout in net.
• Jeffers fell 6-1 to Marquette. Cooper Burkman scored the Jets’ only goal.

In girls basketball last night…
• Calumet smothered Forest Park 73-15. Elli Djerf led the Copper Kings with 23 points.
• Jeffers overpowered Watersmeet 52-17.
• Ontonagon shut down Chassell 56-22. Ella Menigoz paced the Gladiators with 18 points. Ally Etelamaki scored 10 for the Panthers.
• Ewen-Trout Creek slammed Bessemer 66-12.
• Baraga edged L’Anse 40-36.
In boys action last night…
• Lake Linden-Hubbell fell to Wakefield-Marenisco 79-52.
• Jeffers stopped Watersmeet 89-32. Levi Frahm scored 26 for the Jets, and Johnny Schutz added 18.
• Chassell outscored Ontonagon 55-39.
• Ewen-Trout Creek downed Bessemer 75-56. Eric Abramson scored 30 for the Panthers, and Jaden Borseth added 24.
• Baraga defeated L’Anse 69-57.
Tonight, both Hancock teams play at Negaunee.
College Hockey
The Michigan Tech hockey team snapped its three-game losing streak with a crisp 4-1 victory over Lake Superior State University yesterday. Trenton Bliss put the Huskies on the board late in the first period. After the Lakers tied the contest, Tech got second period goals from Brian Halonen, Nick Nardella and Alec Broetzman to put the game away.
College Basketball
The Finlandia University men’s basketball team lost 108-72 to Lakeland University last night. Noah Prestia led the Lions with 12 points.
The Finlandia men’s team will play at Bay College tonight.
After sweeping highly-ranked Grand Valley State University over the weekend, the Michigan Tech women’s basketball team has climbed to number-10 in the latest WBCA National Top 25 Coaches’ Poll.
NHL
The Detroit Red Wings fell to the Nashville Predators 2-0 last night. Jonathan Bernier stopped 31 shots, but took the loss in net.
The Wings host the Predators again tomorrow. Because of Finlandia basketball coverage, the Wings broadcast will begin at 7:15 on KBear 102.3.
NBA
The Detroit Pistons dumped the Orlando Magic 105-93 last night. Saben Lee led Detroit with 21 points. Mason Plumlee snared 12 rebounds.
The Pistons visit the New Orleans Pelicans tonight. Coverage begins at 7:35 on 99.3 The Lift.
MLB
The Detroit Tigers have added another contender for their starting pitching rotation, finalizing a minor-league deal with Julio Teheran. Teheran was a two-time All-Star for the Atlanta Braves. He signed with the Los Angeles Angels last year, but struggled after missing part of the season with COVID-19.
The Milwaukee Brewers finalized a minor league deal to bring third baseman Travis Shaw back.
