Hockey Wins for Kings, ‘Dogs – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School
In high school hockey last night…
– Calumet scored three goals in the third period, and defeated Houghton 5-2. Landon Johnson’s goal broke a 2-2 tie, and was the game-winner. Rylan Anderson scored twice for the Copper Kings, and Alex Mattila and Dean Loukus also scored. Alex Studebaker stopped 21 shots. Ty Halonen and Brad Gauthier scored for the Gremlins. Jimmy Pietila took the loss in net.
– Hancock built an early lead, and hung on to edge Escanaba 4-3. Colton Salani and Trevor Tchida scored in the first period, and Austin Salani added a second-period goal. Austin’s second goal of the game, in the third period, proved to be the game winner, as the Eskymos rallied for two scores in the final two minutes to make the game close.

In girls high school basketball last evening…
– Hancock fell to Ewen-Trout Creek 44-36.
– Baraga shut down Lake Linden-Hubbell 70-22.
– Dollar Bay-Tamarack City lost to Bessemer 55-18.
– Jeffers stopped Republic-Michigamme 69-20.
– Ontonagon got past Chassell 48-40.
– L’Anse fell to Negaunee 67-33.

In high school boys basketball last night, Calumet smothered Baraga 74-30.

Both Houghton swim teams cruised to easy victories over Westwood yesterday. The girls won 121-62, and the boys took a 114-52 victory to remain unbeaten on the season.

Finlandia
The Finlandia women’s basketball team will host Lakeland University this evening. Tip-off is at 5:30 at the Paavo Nurmi Center. The Finlandia men’s team plays at Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, Iowa, tonight.

Dylan Underwood of the Lions has been named the American Collegiate Athletic Association Men’s Basketball Player of the Week. Underwood scored 16 points in Finlandia’s recent loss to Wisconsin-Stout.

MTU/NMU
The NMU men’s team lost 74-69 to Southern Indiana University at the Bellarmine Classic in Louisville yesterday. The Wildcats will face the host team this afternoon.

The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team will play at Minnesota-Duluth this afternoon. The Huskies men’s squad will entertain Winona State University at 5:30 today at the SDC.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings fell 3-2 to the Philadelphia Flyers last evening. Dennis Cholowski and Jacob de la Rose scored for Detroit. Jonathan Bernier made 30 saves. The Wings have lost four in a row, and visit the Carolina Hurricanes tomorrow night. Pregame coverage starts at 6:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

Detroit goaltender Jimmy Howard experienced back problems during warm-ups before the game, and could not play. The Wings called in Philadelphia’s emergency goaltender, Justin Kowalkoski, as a backup. Howard will be evaluated today.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons visit the Minnesota Timberwolves tonight. Pregame coverage begins at 7:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

NFL
Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers and receiver Davante Adams have been named to the NFC Pro Bowl roster. Detroit Lions cornerback Darius Slay also made the team.
