High School
In high school hockey last night…
– Calumet ripped Kingsford 9-3. Dean Loukus had a hat trick and two assists. Alex Mattila had two goals and two assists. Jackson Rilei, Scott Loukus, Gabe Coppo and Nick Djerf also scored. Tom Erkkila had three assists. Alex Studebaker made 23 saves.
– Hancock blanked Escanaba 8-0 in a game that ended after the second period because of the mercy rule. Mason Mikesch and Austin Salani each scored twice for the Bulldogs. Colton Salani, Chad Nordstrom, Calvin Heinonen and Cole Stuber also found the net. It was the final home game for Hancock coach Dan Rouleau, who will retire at the end of the season.
– Houghton fell 3-1 to Marquette. The Redmen took a 2-0 lead into the third period. Ty Halonen’s power play goal narrowed the gap, but another late goal by Marquette put the game away. Jimmy Pietila made 31 saves.
The regular season wraps up tomorrow, when Jeffers skates at Escanaba. The playoffs open with the regional semifinals on Thursday, and we’ll bring you all the games from our local teams on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
In high school girls basketball last night…
– Calumet downed West Iron County 53-46. Marybeth Halonen led the Copper Kings with 16 points, and Elli Djerf added 15.
– Houghton lost to Marquette 70-41.
– Lake Linden-Hubbell got past Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 31-24. The Lakes retain the Battle of the Bay trophy. Megan Corrigan scored 10 points for Lake Linden. Ashley Datto of the Blue Bolts led all scorers with 12.
– Jeffers fell to Ewen-Trout Creek 63-31.
– Chassell defeated Watersmeet 54-39.
– Ontonagon stopped Bessemer 59-20.
In boys action last night…
– Calumet outscored Westwood 67-57.
– Houghton defeated Kingsford 59-51. Brad Simonson scored 27 for the Gremlins, and Pablo Salgado added 21.
On the boys schedule this evening…
– Calumet hosts Gwinn.
– Hancock journeys to Iron Mountain.
– Jeffers plays at Lake Linden-Hubbell.
– Dollar Bay-Tamarack City welcomes Republic-Michigamme

Western Collegiate Hockey Association
The Michigan Tech hockey team has the weekend off.
The Northern Michigan University hockey squad skates at Lake Superior State University tonight and tomorrow night.
Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
Both Michigan Tech basketball teams defeated Davenport University last night...
– The women rode dominant first and third quarters to a 74-60 victory. Ellie Mackay led the Huskies with 27 points.
– The men took an early lead, and held on for a 73-63 victory. Kyle Monroe scored 29.
Both Tech teams entertain Grand Valley State University tomorrow. The women’s contest starts at 1:00, and the men’s at 3:00.
Both Northern Michigan University teams lost to Grand Valley State last evening – the women 53-38, and the men 82-79 in double overtime.
Both Wildcats teams host Davenport tomorrow.
Finlandia University
The Finlandia University women’s hockey team concludes its season with games at Trine University tonight and tomorrow.
Hancock High School basketball player Jordan Pertile has committed to join the Finlandia women’s team next season.
GLHL
The Calumet Wolverines host the Marquette Mutineers tonight, and the Portage Lake Pioneers tomorrow. Tonight’s game begins at 8:30, and tomorrow’s at 7:30. To support Hockey Week in Calumet, kids will be admitted free to both games, and are asked to wear their youth hockey jerseys.
Exhibition Hockey
The Battle of the Bridge hockey game between the Michigan U.P. Veterans Hockey Club and the Saginaw Spirit Warriors will be played tomorrow night at 7:00 at Dee Stadium. Both teams are made up of veterans. $5.00 tickets will be available at the door. Money raised will support the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans.
NHL
The Detroit Red Wings visit the New York Islanders tonight. Coverage begins at 7:40 on 99.3 The Lift.
NBA
The Detroit Pistons returned from the All-Star break and lost 126-106 to the Milwaukee Bucks last evening. Christian Wood led Detroit with 18 points and 11 rebounds.
The Pistons visit the Portland Trail Blazers Sunday. Coverage begins at 8:35 on 99.3 The Lift.
As expected, former Pitons guard Reggie Jackson cleared NBA waivers, and has signed with the Los Angeles Clippers.
MLB
The Detroit Tigers take to the field for the first time this spring, as they host the Southeastern University Fire in an exhibition game this afternoon. Detroit’s Grapefruit League schedule begins tomorrow, against the Philadelphia Phillies.
The Milwaukee Brewers begin their Cactus League schedule tomorrow against the Texas Rangers.
NFL
Six months ago, the Detroit Lions gave defensive tackle Damon “Snacks” Harrison a contract extension. Now, after an injury-riddled and unproductive season, there are multiple reports that the team is set to release him. The move would clear $7 million in salary cap space.
