In boys high school basketball last evening…
- Ontonagon got past Lake Linden-Hubbell 60-53.
- Dollar Bay-Tamarack City dispatched Watersmeet 69-44.
- L’Anse lost to Ironwood 55-44.
In girls play…
- Houghton outscored Lake Linden-Hubbell 71-55. Ellie Hainault led the Gremlins with 26 points and nine rebounds. Eva Gerard added 21 points and nine rebounds. and Jacey Sleeman scored 11. For the Lakes, Emily Jokela had 23 points, and Cleo Milkey 21.
- Baraga grabbed a big early lead, and held on to beat Calumet 43-37. The Vikings led 18-3 after the first quarter, and maintained a 10-point lead at halftime. The Copper Kings held some brief leads in the fourth quarter, but Baraga sank some late free throws to seal the win. Kara Roberts led the Vikings with 16 points, and Shayla Elmblad added 11. Allie Bjorn scored 11 for Calumet. Hear the game replay here.
- Hancock fell to Ewen-Trout Creek 49-40.
- Dollar Bay-Tamarack City shut down Watersmeet 71-25.
- L’Anse blitzed Ironwood 80-53.
- West Iron County lost to Negaunee 47-28.
- Forest Park fell to Florence 47-41.
In hockey last evening…
- Hancock downed Kingsford 5-4 in overtime.
- Jeffers spotted Marquette four first-period goals, then roared back to edge the Sentinels 6-5 in overtime. Brit Heinonen had a hat trick, Benton Rajala scored twice, and Brogan Turner had a goal and three assists. Kasen Helminen made 17 saves.
Houghton has moved to the top of the Michigan Hockey Coaches’ Division Three poll this week. Jeffers breaks into the top-10 at number seven, and Calumet moves up to number-eight. The Gremlins are rated sixth in the All-Division Super 10. Marquette is 10th, but last night’s loss to the Jets could change that.
At yesterday’s ski meet in Marquette…
- The Houghton boys finished second, with 55 points to Marquette’s 25. Ironwood was 3rd with 112. Eli Heathman placed second in the slalom and third in the giant slalom, Jack Haeussler was seventh in the slalom and sixth in the giant slalom, and Logan Niemi 10th in the slalom and ninth in the giant slalom. Marquette’s Sam Dehlin won both events.
- The Houghton girls took fourth place behind Marquette, Norway, and Ironwood. Lily Martineau finished ninth in the giant slalom. Marquette’s Estelle Dehlin won the slalom and giant slalom.
At a three-way swim meet at Ishpeming yesterday…
- The Houghton boys easily defeated the Hematites, with Manistique a distant third. Individual winners for the Gremlins included Anderson Limkemann in the 200 freestyle and 100 breaststroke, William Jiang in the 200 individual medley, Josh Bennett in the 50 freestyle, Collin Raasio in the 100 butterfly, and Brett Gaff in the 100 backstroke. The boys also won all 3 relays.
- The girls also took an easy win, with Ishpeming second, and Manistique third. Individual winners for the Gremlins included Aya Keteri in the 200 and 500 freestyles, Rose Dennis in the 200 individual medley, Katie Sarau in the 50 freestyle, Meg Ruohonen in diving, Evelyn LaTendresse in the 100 butterfly, Stella Soumis in the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke, and Ahri Olson in the 100 breaststroke. The girls also won all 3 relays.
NHL
The Red Wings won their fifth straight game, shading the Senators 3-2 in overtime. Patrick Kane scored the game-winner on a power play 2:21 into the extra period. Dylan Larkin and Joe Veleno scored during regulation. Alex Lyon opened in net, and stopped all 10 shots he faced before leaving with an upper-body injury. Cam Talbot made 21 saves in relief. There’s no immediate word as to how serious Lyon’s injury is.
The Wings entertain the Blackhawks Friday. Coverage will begin at 6:40 on 99.3 The Lift.
