High School
In high school hockey…
- Calumet edged Hancock 2-1 in the first game of the annual Copper Island Classic. Ben Anderson and Brendan Boberg scored for the Copper Kings in the second period. Hancock’s Tevin Stukel found the net in the third period. Beau Jukuri got the win in net, as the Kings outshot the Bulldogs 34-31. Isaac Johnson took the loss for Hancock. Those teams meet again tonight for the deciding game of the total-goals series. Coverage will begin at 6:40 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3. - Houghton dominated Marquette 8-2 in a wild, penalty-filled contest at Lakeview Arena. After a scoreless opening period, the Gremlins took control with six goals in the second stanza. Connor Arko had a hat trick, Teegan Tapani scored twice, and Hudson Markham had three assists. Houghton outshot the Sentinels 45-14. That home-and-home series continues tonight at Dee Stadium. Coverage will begin at 6:10 ahead of a 6:30 faceoff on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf. Fans are invited to skate with the Gremlins after the contest.

- In Division Four, Goodrich shut down Niles 35-6.
- In Division Six, Jackson Lumen Christi pounded Lansing Catholic 56-18, winning their state-record 14th title.
- In Division Two, Orchard Lake St. Mary’s outscored Byron Center 35-19.

College Hockey
The Michigan Tech hockey team skunked Bowling Green 3-0 last night. Derek Mullahy earned his third career shutout with 28 saves. Logan Morrell, Viktor Hurtig and Matthew Campbell scored. Those teams play again tonight in Ohio.
The Northern Hockey squad dropped a 4-1 decision at Augustana last evening. Those teams will play a rematch tonight.
College Basketball
The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team welcomes Concordia-St. Paul today at 2:00.
The Northern Michigan men’s team hosts Concordia today at 3:00.
NHL
The Red Wings couldn’t hold an early lead, and fell to the Devils 5-4 yesterday afternoon. Vladimir Tarasenko and Lucas Raymond staked Detroit to a 2-0 advantage. After New Jersey tied it, Tyler Motte put Detroit back on top, but the Devils netted three straight to take control. Justin Holle added a late Detroit tally.
The Wings welcome the Canucks tomorrow, with coverage beginning at 12:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
NBA
The Pistons buried the Pacers 130-106 last night. Malik Beasley scored 25 for Detroit. Cade Cunningham returned after missing three games, and contributed 24 points and 11 rebounds. Jalen Duren had 12 rebounds and 14 points.
The Pistons host the 76ers tonight, with coverage beginning at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.
NFL
In yesterday’s NFL game, the Chiefs recovered a botched Raiders snap with 11 seconds remaining in the game, to preserve a 19-17 victory, and guarantee them a berth in the playoffs.
Tomorrow night, the Bills host the 49ers, with pregame at 7:30 on 99.3 The Lift.
After suffering several injuries in Thursday’s win over the Bears, the Lions have signed veteran defensive lineman Jonah Williams off the Rams’ practice squad. He was a full-time starter for L-A last season. They also added linebacker Kwon Alexander off the Broncos’ practice squad. He has started two games for Denver this season. One of Thursday’s injuries was season-ending – Malcolm Rodriguez suffered a torn ACL.
MLB
The Tigers have signed pitcher Randy Vanasco to a minor league contract. Vanasco made two relief appearances for Detroit last summer, after his contract was purchased from the Dodgers. He has been assigned to Toledo, but will receive an invitation to spring training.
