Hockey Wins for Gremlins, Copper Kings – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school hockey last night…
• Houghton blanked Grandville 8-0, in a game that ended early in the third period because of the mercy rule. Connor Raffaelli had two goals and three assists. Mike Maillette had two goals and two assists, and Connor Arko scored twice. Cooper Flachs stopped 13 shots to earn his first varsity shutout. The Gremlins improve to 17-0.
• Calumet edged Northville 3-2 in overtime.

Today…
• Houghton hosts Northville. Coverage will begin at 1:10 ahead of a 1:30 faceoff on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf.
• Hancock entertains Grandville at 1:00.

In boys basketball last night…
• Houghton cruised past Ironwood 81-45. Luke Hill scored 28 points for the Gremlins, Isaiah Lawson 17, and Lane Laux 14.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell smothered Bessemer 63-19.
• L’Anse v Wakefield-Marenisco – no report.

In girls action last evening…
• Calumet dumped Gwinn 52-32. Caitlyn Strom scored 21 for the Copper Kings.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell v Watersmeet – no report.
• Baraga stuffed Ontonagon 78-29.
• L’Anse got past Wakefield-Marenisco 52-42.

In girls play today…
• Hancock welcomes Escanaba for a make-up game from January 12th. The JV contest will tip off at 3:30, with the varsity to follow.

The Houghton swim team competes at the Marquette Splash and Dash today.

College Basketball

Both Michigan Tech teams tip off at Purdue Northwest today.

Both NMU teams play at Parkside today.

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech hockey team spotted Bemidji State a one-goal lead early in the second period, then came back to earn a 2-1 victory. Isaac Gordon and Matthew Campbell scored for the Huskies. Blake Pietila made 23 saves. Tech hosts the Beavers again tonight at 6:07.

The Northern Michigan hockey squad pulled out a 3-2 win over Saint Thomas last night. Gustafsson Nyberg scored the game-winner. Beni Halasz made 26 saves. Those teams skate again tonight in Marquette.

GLHL

The Calumet Wolverines lost to the Santa Rosa Growlers 7-3 last night. Those teams play again tonight out on the west coast.

NHL

The Red Wings fell to the Hurricanes 4-2 last night. Klim Kostin and J.T. Compher scored for Detroit. Alex Lyon made 26 saves.

The Wings host the Lightning tomorrow. Because of NFL football on 99.3 The Lift, Wings coverage will begin at 6:45 on KBear 102.3.

NBA

The Pistons host the Bucks this afternoon.

Cade Cunningham has been cleared to resume basketball activities, after straining his knee January 7th. He should be back in the lineup by the end of next week.

NFL

The NFL playoff field will be cut to four teams this weekend.

• The Packers visit the 49ers for an 8:15 game.

• The Lions welcome the Buccaneers for a 3:00 match.

MLB

The Tigers have avoided arbitration with pitcher Casey Mize. The deal will pay Mize $830,000 this season. Detroit has a $3.1 million option for 2025. Mize missed last season as he rehabbed from Tommy John ligament replacement surgery.

Former Brewers closer Josh Hader has signed with the Astros. The five-year, $95 million deal is the largest in history for a reliever.
