Hockey Wins for Gremlins, Bulldogs and Huskies – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school hockey last night…
• Mike Maillette had a hat trick, as Houghton pounded Utica Eisenhower 8-0. Camden Markham had two goals and two assists, Gaborik Carlson had two goals, and Landon Stevens found the net once. Troy Povich earned the shutout in goal, in a game that ended 5:20 into the third period because of the mercy rule.
• Hancock edged Rochester 3-2.

In hockey this afternoon…
• Houghton hosts Rochester. Coverage will begin at 12:40 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf.
• Calumet welcomes Utica Eisenhower. Coverage will begin at 12:40 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3.

In high school boys basketball last night…
• The Calumet game at Iron Mountain was postponed because of bad weather. No make-up date has been provided.
• Jeffers shut down Baraga 90-16.
• Ontonagon fell at Wakefield-Marenisco 68-50.

In girls hoops action last night…
• Houghton dispatched Negaunee 65-56.
• The Calumet game at West Iron County was postponed because of bad weather. No make-up date has been provided.
• Baraga held Lake Linden-Hubbell to just six points in the second half, on the way to a 54-22 win over the Lakes. Reide Osterman scored 16 for the Vikings.
• Chassell got past Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 42-37. Ally Etelamaki scored 13 for the Panthers, and Trisha Pietila added 12. Ashlea Datto scored 18 for the Blue Bolts.
• Jeffers lost to Bessemer 44-38. Sara Johnson led the Jets with 17 points.
• Ontonagon stuffed Wakefield-Marenisco 58-13.

The Calumet All-Sports Boosters Club is holding a used jersey sale this morning in the CLK cafeteria. From 9:00 until noon, jerseys from volleyball, football, hockey, basketball, softball, track, cross country, golf and cheerleading will be available, along with all sorts of other items for sale. All proceeds go to the booster club.

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech hockey team routed Saint Thomas 6-1 last evening. The Huskies broke the game open early, with three goals in the first period, and three more in the second. Justin Misiak led the charge with two goals and an assist. Tommy Parrottino, Brian Halonen, Colin Swoyer and Tristan Ashbrook each had one tally. Trenton Bliss recorded three assists. Blake Pietila made 11 saves. Those teams face off again tonight at 6:07 at the SDC.

The Northern Michigan hockey team dropped game one of the Cappo Cup series against Lake Superior State 7-2 last night. Those teams play again tonight in Sault Ste. Marie.

Both Finlandia hockey teams are off until after the holidays.

College Basketball

Both Michigan Tech basketball teams host Ferris State this afternoon. The women tip off at noon, and the men at 2:00.

Both Northern Michigan teams welcome Lake Superior State today.

Both Finlandia basketball teams host Great Lakes Christian this afternoon – the women at 1:00, and the men at 3:00.

Adult Hockey

In Great Lakes Hockey League action…
• The Portage Lake Pioneers host the Marquette Mutineers tonight at 7:30.
• The Calumet Wolverines have the weekend off.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons’ losing streak reached 11 games, with a 109-93 loss to the New Orleans Pelicans last night. Trey Lyles led Detroit with 18 points, and Cade Cunningham added 16.

The Pistons host the Brooklyn Nets tomorrow.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings dropped their third straight, falling 7-3 to the Colorado Avalanche last night. Darren Helm, Vladislav Namestnikov and Joe Veleno scored for Detroit.

The Wings are off until Tuesday, when they host the New York Islanders. Coverage will begin at 7:15 on 99.3 The Lift. 

NFL

Tomorrow…
• The Detroit Lions visit the Denver Broncos for a 4:05 game.
• The Green Bay Packers host the Chicago Bears in the evening contest.
Hear both broadcasts on 99.3 The Lift.

The Lions will be without their top two running backs tomorrow. D’Andre Swift is still recovering from a shoulder injury, and Jamaal Williams has been placed on the COVID-19 list. Safety Tracy Walker will also miss the game on the COVID-19 list.

The Packers will play without receiver Randall Cobb, who is suffering from a core muscle injury.
