Hockey Victories for Gremlins, Jets – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school hockey last evening…
• Houghton defeated Traverse City Central 4-1. Mike Maillotte had two goals for the Gremlins. Jace DeForge had a goal and an assist, and Tanner Flachs scored once. Andrew Lampinen earned his first varsity win in net, as the Gremlins outshot the Trojans 37-11.
• Calumet fell to Trenton 4-1. Luca Matous netted the Kings’ only goal. Hunter Tuoriniemi made 32 saves. Hear the game replay here.
• Hancock lost 3-2 to Howell.
• Jeffers pounded Escanaba 7-2 at Meadowbrook Arena. The Jets scored the final five goals of the contest. Kailob Bianco had a hat trick plus an assist. Cage Osterman had a goal and four assists. Benton Rajala had a goal and three assists. Tage Rajala and Cody Turner each scored once.

In hockey today…
• Houghton welcomes Trenton. Coverage will begin at 12:40 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf.
• Calumet entertains Howell. Coverage will begin at 6:40 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3.

In boys high school basketball last night…
• Houghton fell to Westwood 71-66.
• Chassell lost to Stephenson 62-50. Eli Danison led the Panthers with 15 points. Oliver Campbell added 11 and Kalvin Kytta had 10.
• Ontonagon got past Baraga 42-38.

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech hockey team fell to Bowling Green 2-1 in overtime last evening. Logan Pietila scored the Huskies’ only goal. Blake Pietila made 28 saves.

The Huskies host the Falcons again tonight at 6:07.

The Northern hockey team skated to a 2-2 draw against Augustana last night. The Vikings won the unofficial overtime shootout. Those teams face off again tonight in Marquette.

College Basketball

All of the Michigan Tech and NMU basketball teams have the weekend off.

Austin Rilei scored twice, as the Calumet Wolverines outscored the Marquette Mutineers 9-5 last night.

NHL

The Red Wings visit the Canadiens tonight . Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Pistons entertain the Cavaliers this evening.

NFL

The Lions visit the Saints in a 1:00 contest tomorrow on 99.3 The Lift.

The Packers welcome the Chiefs in the Sunday night game on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

The Tigers have two new minor league managers. Tim Federowicz takes over at Triple-A Toledo. He was the Tigers’ catching coach last season, and has managed in the Mariners’ minor league system. Tony Cappuccilli steps in at High-A West Michigan. He was the bench coach at Toledo last season. Former Mud Hens manager Anthony Iapoce will be the Tigers’ first base coach this season. Former Whitecaps skipper Brayan Peña will serve as a roving catching coach for all of Detroit’s minor league teams.
