Hockey Shutout Wins for Houghton, Jeffers – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School

In hockey last evening…
• Houghton blanked Calumet 5-0. Camden Markham had two goals and an assist. Hudson Markham had one goal and an assist. Mike Maillette and Jace Deforge also scored. Bryant Lee made 16 saves, as the Gremlins notched their ninth shutout of the season. Aksel Loukus stopped 40 shots for the Copper Kings.
• Hancock fell to Marquette 5-1. Brady Galetto scored the Bulldogs’ only goal. Saku Cunard made 23 saves.
• Jeffers mercied Negaunee 8-0.

In boys basketball last evening…
• Houghton fell to Marquette 65-43.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell downed L’Anse 72-42. Gabe Popko led the Lakes with 25 points. Shawn Gibbons scored 20 for the Purple Hornets.

On the girls schedule…
• Houghton fell to Escanaba 67-62. Stella Wickstrom led the Gremlins with 20 points. Annika Peterson and Meghan Trewhella each added 14.
• Hancock stopped Westwood 49-40. The Bulldogs improve to 15-1.
• Dollar Bay-Tamarack City fell to Watersmeet 47-43.
• Baraga lost at Ishpeming 46-36.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell defeated L’Anse 57-45. Emily Jokela scored 21 for the Lakes. Brooklyn Dompier had 24 points for the Purple Hornets.

On the boys schedule tonight…
• Dollar Bay-Tamarack City tips off at Hancock.

College Volleyball

The Finlandia University volleyball team has added a new recruit. Martha Rutherford played for Negaunee High School.

NHL

The Red Wings visit the Oilers tonight. Coverage will begin at 9:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Wings have called Jakub Vrana up from the Grand Rapids Griffins. He’ll fill in for Lucas Raymond, who’s been placed on injured reserve with a lower body injury suffered in practice.

NBA

The Pistons visit the Celtics this evening.

Former Lions head coach Jim Caldwell is joining the staff of the Panthers. He’ll be the senior assistant coach to new Carolina head coach Frank Reich.
