High School

In high school boys basketball last night…
• Houghton lost to Kingsford 90-60.
• Blake Tarvis’ shot in the closing seconds capped a late comeback, as Calumet edged Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 45-43.
• Ewen-Trout Creek got past Lake Linden-Hubbell 65-57 in overtime.
• Jeffers overwhelmed Baraga 83-22. Ashton Kunishige led the Jets with 20 points. Damien Heikkinen scored 13. Levi Frahm had a triple double with 11 points 11 rebounds 12 assists and 8 steals. Matthew Schutz had 10 points and 10 rebounds. Tavin Larsen had 10 points. Nick Sobay led the Vikings with seven points.

On the girls’ schedule…
• Houghton shut down L’Anse 76-35. Annika Peterson led the Gremlins with 19 points. Meghan Trewhella added 16. Brooklyn Dompier scored 12 for the Purple Hornets.
• Dollar Bay-Tamarack City slipped past Stephenson 34-31.
• Ontonagon overpowered Bessemer 45-18.
• Ewen-Trout Creek outscored Northland Pines 51-24.
• Baraga stopped Jeffers 58-20. Kylie Michaelson scored 16, and Corina Jahfetson added 13 for the Vikings. Taylor Heinonen and Sara Johnson each scored eight for the Jets.

In high school hockey last night…
• Calumet fell at Marquette 3-1. Donnie Nicely scored the Kings’ only goal with an assist from Nathan Londo in the second period. Aksel Loukus made 36 saves, as the Kings were outshot 39-11.
• Jeffers lost to Kingsford 3-1.

In hockey tonight…
• Hancock skates at Houghton. Coverage will begin at 6:40 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf.

The WestPAC is expanding its football membership. Gladstone, Kingsford and Menominee will join next fall. They’ll compete in the large-school Copper Division, along with Houghton, Calumet, Hancock, Negaunee and Westwood. L’Anse and Iron Mountain will drop down to the small-school Iron Division, along with Bark River Harris, Gwinn, Ishpeming, Manistique, and West Iron County. 

College Basketball

The Finlandia men’s basketball game against Wisconsin-Superior scheduled for last night was canceled because of illness. No make-up date has been announced.

The Finlandia women’s team plays at Wisconsin-River Falls this evening.

College Baseball

The Finlandia softball team has introduced a new recruit. Rory Miller is a two-way player who is currently a senior at Traverse City Central High School. 

NHL

Ville Husso made 44 saves, as the Red Wings downed the Lightning 4-2 last night. Michael Rasmussen, Jonatan Berggren, Adam Erne and David Perron scored for Detroit.

The Wings visit the Panthers tomorrow. We’ll join the game after Calumet basketball on KBear 102.3.

NBA

The Pistons turned down the Heat 116-96 last evening. Bojan Bogdanovic scored 31.

The Pistons visit the Pelicans tonight. Coverage begins at 7:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

The first-ever Major League Baseball Draft lottery was good to the Tigers last night. Projected to get the sixth pick, Detroit instead claimed the third selection in next summer’s amateur draft. The Brewers got the 18th pick.

Former Brewers infielder Jace Peterson has signed a two-year deal with the Athletics.
