MLB

The Tigers swept their doubleheader against the Guardians yesterday.

In the first game, starter Garrett Hill sparkled in his major league debut, as Detroit claimed a 4-1 victory. Hill turned in six strong innings, allowing a run on just two hits. The Tigers staked him to an early lead when Miguel Cabrera singled home two runs in the first inning. Jonathan Schoop had four hits, stole a base, and scored twice.

In the nightcap, the Tigers came from behind to earn a 5-3 victory. After grabbing a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third, Cleveland scored three times in the top of the fourth, as starter Alex Faedo left the game with soreness in his left hip. Detroit tied it in the bottom of the inning, took the lead in the bottom of the sixth, and sealed the win with a solo home run from Eric Haase in the seventh. Schoop added two more hits.

The Tigers host the Guardians again tonight. Drew Hutchison is being brought back from Toledo to pitch against Cal Quantrill. Coverage will begin at 6:50 on 99.3 The Lift.

To make room for Hill on the roster, the Tigers sent reliever Will Vest down to Toledo. Manager A.J. Hinch said the move was forced because the club can only carry 13 pitchers, and that he expects to bring Vest back very soon.

Victor Caratini’s three-run homer in the bottom of the 10th inning gave the Brewers a 5-2 win over the Cubs yesterday. Eric Lauer turned in a good start, giving up a run on two hits over six innings. The Crew tied it in the bottom of the seventh. Chicago reclaimed the lead in the top of the ninth, when Seiya Suzuki legged out an inside-the-park home run. Milwaukee forced extra innings when Christian Yelich drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the ninth.

The Brewers host the Cubs again tonight. Jason Alexander will pitch against Kyle Hendricks.
