In boys basketball last night…
– Calumet edged Ewen-Trout Creek 54-52 in overtime. Matt Ojala led the Copper Kings with 16 points. Jake Witt had 22 for the Panthers.
– Negaunee scored the first 11 points of the game, and defeated Houghton 54-33. See video highlights from the game here.
– Jeffers got past Chassell 55-48.
In girls action last night…
– Calumet outscored L’Anse 77-54.
– Dollar Bay-Tamarack City defeated Bessemer 52-45.
– Jeffers shut down Republic-Michigamme 68-22.
– Chassell downed Ontonagon 51-41.
– Baraga took control late in the game, and defeated Lake Linden-Hubbell 50-42. Justice Kinnunen led the Vikings with 23 points, including two three-pointers that helped the Vikings pull away. Alexa Destrampe of the Lakes led all scorers with 29 points.
MTU
Amanda Kautzer of the Michigan Tech Nordic Ski team has been chosen to represent the United States at the upcoming Youth World Championships. Kautzer earned the honor by placing first in the sprints at the youth biathlon trials conducted by the United States Biathlon Association last week. The World Championships will be held late next month.
Michigan Tech hockey goaltender Angus Redmond has again been named the Rookie Player of the Week by the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. Redmond stopped 47 of 48 shots in the Huskies’ two games at the Great Lakes Invitational Tournament last week. It’s the third Rookie of the Week honor of the season for Redmond, who was also once named Defensive Player of the Week.
NBA
The Detroit Pistons’ on-and-off defense was off last night, as they fell to the Indiana Pacers 121-116. The Pistons trailed early, came back to take a third-quarter lead, but couldn’t stop Indiana’s Paul George, who scored 32 points. Tobias Harris led Detroit with 22 points off the bench. The Pistons will host the Charlotte Hornets tomorrow night.
NHL
The Detroit Red Wings visit the Anaheim Ducks tonight. Faceoff will be at 10:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
Curling
The Copper Country Curling Club has scheduled two open houses for those who would like to learn more about the sport. The first will be tonight from 6:00 until 9:00. The second will be Saturday from noon until 3:00. Both will be at the Drill House Rink, behind the Calumet Colosseum. Watch some curling action, and try a few shots yourself. There is no charge. If you plan to try curling, they suggest you bring some gym shoes to wear on the ice.
