High School
In high school golf yesterday, Escanaba swept the Division One U.P. championships…
– The Houghton girls team finished second to the Eskymos at the Escanaba Country Club. Escanaba’s Paxton Johnson was the medalist, with an 80. Houghton’s Kaaren Liston tied for second, with an 85. Elle Colombe of the Gremlins tied for fourth. Full results are here.
– Calumet was the runner-up at the boys meet at Sweetgrass in Harris. Wyatt Tuoriniemi finished fourth individually, and Tyler Johnson was fifth. Houghton placed fifth in the team rankings, with Jiseung Choi eighth overall. L’Anse finished 11th in the team standings. Full results are here.
Ontonagon dominated the Division Three U.P. championships at Irish Oaks in Gladstone, yesterday. The Gladiator girls finished nine shots ahead of runner-up Forest Park. Marli Hietila from Chassell was the girls medalist, with an 88. The Ontonagon boys finished in a first place tie with Cedarville. Ed Polakowski and Henry Menigoz of the Gladiators tied for second individually. Full results were not posted.
In softball, local Division Four district titles will be decided today…
– At the Boneyard in Lake Linden, Hancock will face Ironwood at noon; Wakefield-Marenisco will take Lake Linden-Hubbell at 2:00; and the winners will then meet in the title game. Our broadcast coverage will begin around 11:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com. We’ll bring you both semifinals, and the championship game if a local team is involved.
– At Eben, Baraga will face Gwinn at noon; L’Anse will take on Ishpeming at 2:00, and the title game will follow.
In baseball, the Division Four district tournament will take place at Wakefield-Marenisco today. Jeffers meets Ironwood at 12:00 Eastern time; Gogebic faces L’Anse at 2:00 Eastern time. The winners will then play for the title.
The Division Three softball and baseball tournaments will take place tomorrow. Calumet is hosting both events.

MLB
The Detroit Tigers scored five runs in the first inning, and defeated the California Angels 6-2 yesterday. The big blow in the opening inning was a three-run triple by Victor Reyes.
The Tigers entertain the Toronto Blue Jays tonight. Blaine Hardy will start against Jaime Garcia. Pregame coverage will begin at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
Yesterday’s win came at a cost. Third baseman Jeimer Candelario was hit on the hand by a pitch in the fourth inning. He left the game, and is considered day-to-day. Starting pitcher Ryan Carpenter suffered an oblique strain in the fifth inning. He’s been placed on the disabled list, and is expected to miss at least two weeks.
On the bright side, first baseman Miguel Cabrera could return from the disabled list tonight. He’s been nursing a sore hamstring.
The Milwaukee Brewers had yesterday off, and begin an interleague series against the White Sox in Chicago tonight. Chase Anderson will pitch against Hector Santiago.
NBA
Golden State took the opening game of the NBA Championship Series last night, defeating Cleveland 124-114. Game two will be played Sunday in Oakland.
NHL
The Stanley Cup playoff continues tomorrow night in Washington. The Golden Knights and Capitals are tied at one win per team.
The Detroit Red Wings are looking for a new coach for their top minor league team. Todd Nelson is leaving the Grand Rapids Griffins to become an assistant coach with the Dallas Stars.
Fishing
The annual Knights of Columbus Walleye Fishing Tournament will be held tomorrow on Portage Lake, Torch Lake, and Lac la Belle.
