Heinonen Tosses Fast Pitch No-Hitter – Tuesday Sports Wrap

MLB

The Detroit Tigers had yesterday off, and begin a series in Chicago against the White Sox tonight. Matthew Boyd will start against Reynaldo López. Pregame coverage will begin at 7:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Christian Yelich blasted his 30th home run of the season, as the Milwaukee Brewers outslugged the Cincinnati Reds 8-6 last night. Adrian Houser pitched five scoreless innings, but left as Cincinnati scored three runs in the sixth. The Crew took control with a five-run seventh, then added two more on the Yelich homer in the ninth to hold off a late Reds comeback. Keston Hiura and Lorenzo Cain also homered for Milwaukee.

The Brewers will play at Cincinnati again tonight. Chase Anderson will pitch against Tanner Roark.

American Legion Baseball

The Copper Country Flames American Legion baseball team’s game against the Marquette Blues scheduled for today has been canceled. 

Fast Pitch Softball

In Copper Country Fast Pitch Softball League action last night…
– Superior National Bank swept its doubleheader against Northern Michigan Land Brokers, 3-2 and 7-1. The first game was scoreless until NMLB plated two runs in the top of the sixth. SNB responded with three in the bottom of the inning. Rosalie Kangas was the winning pitcher and Mel Baker took the tough loss. Larissa Anderson was the winning pitcher in the second game, and also had a triple and a single.
– Coca Cola of Hancock also earned a sweep, defeating Crush/Diamond House/Baby E’s 12-0 and 16-5. Delaney Heinonen threw a no hitter in the opener. Taylor Vertin earned the win in the nightcap.

Slow Pitch Softball

In Copper Country Slow Pitch Softball League play last evening…
– Coca Cola/Monte Carlo defeated Luigi’s 21-11. Louigi’s then fell to Auto Pro/ThermoAnalytics 30-22. Logan Rastello had a home run, a triple and three doubles for Auto Pro. Jason Carne and Cody Sivonen also homered.
– Harter’s Carquest v A and S Industrial – not reported.
– McGann’s/Northern Auto v Pat’s Foods/Bucko’s, and v Downtowner Two – not reported.

Twilight League Baseball

In Copper Country Twilight League baseball action tonight…
– Garnet Garage faces Dean Kangas-State Farm at the Hancock Driving Park.
– REL-Mohawk Technology meets Superior National Bank-Stanton at the Stanton Field.

In Copper Country Horseshoe League play last night…
– Dreamland One blanked Bucko’s Party Store 9-0.
– L and L shut out Drift Inn 9-0.
– Calumet One stopped Ahmeek Fire Department 7-2.
– Dreamland Two defeated Rocky’s Bar 6-3.
– Calumet Electronics downed 41 Lumber 7-2.
– Harter’s Party Store got past Loading Zone 6-3.

NHL

Valtteri Filppula is returning to the Detroit Red Wings. The 35-year-old center signed a two-year, six-million dollar contract yesterday. Filppula was Detroit’s third-round draft pick in 2002. He played with Detroit until 2013, when he left as a free agent. The Wings also signed former Colorado Avalanche defenseman Patrik Nemeth yesterday.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons have added a third point guard. A day after signing former MVP Derrick Rose, the club agreed to a free agent deal with Tim Frazier, who split time between the New Orleans Pelicans and Milwaukee Bucks last season. Meanwhile, former Pistons point guard Ish Smith has signed a free agent deal with the Washington Wizards.

Frisbee

Four new members will be inducted into the International Frisbee and USA Guts Hall of Fame at the Calumet Colosseum this weekend.
– Al Bauman possessed one of the best sidearm throws in the history of Guts, and was an integral part of the legendary Motor City team, as well as several others. He played in 25 tournament Finals, and was a founding member of the Guts Players Association.
– Bill “Brock” DePetro was a high-energy defensive wizard whose teams included the Bad Apples and the Cupola Bandits. He played in 16 major tournament finals, and was named MVP at the 2008 and 2012 IFTs, the 1995 GPA Worlds, and the 2008 US Nationals.
– Tom Matuzak’s vicious left-hand serve earned him the nickname “the Sandy Koufax of Guts.” He played for the Motor City and Mr. Naturals teams, and appeared in 17 tournament finals.
– John Sappington turned Ann Arbor into a Guts Frisbee hotbed in the 1970s, as an organizer of the University of Michigan Frisbee Club, and director of the U-M Indoor Frisbee Festival. As a player, he competed in eight tournament finals.

The 62nd Coca Cola International Frisbee Tournament will be held this weekend. Because of construction at Agassiz Field, this year’s tournament will take place at the Hancock Driving Park.
