Hebert Leads WestPAC Girls Hoops All-Stars – Friday Sports Wrap

High School

All of yesterday’s high school athletic events were snowed out.

The high school hockey tournament regional semifinals will be made up tonight at the SDC.
• Houghton faces Jeffers at 5:30.
• Calumet takes on Hancock at 7:30.
Coverage will begin at 5:10 on KBear 102.3.

From last night’s girls basketball schedule…
• The Houghton game at Ontonagon will be made up tonight.
• The Baraga game at Ewen-Trout Creek will be made up tonight.
• The Lake Linden-Hubbell game at Calumet will not be made up.
• The Dollar Bay-Tamarack City game at Jeffers will not be made up.

From last night’s boys schedule…
• Houghton’s home game against Iron Mountain will be made up tonight.
• The Jeffers game at Ewen-Trout Creek will be made up tonight.
• The L’Anse game at Forest Park will be made up Monday.

The Chassell boys and girls games at Wakefield-Marenisco were canceled, and will not be made up.

Also on the boys schedule this evening…
• Hancock welcomes West Iron County.
• Dollar Bay-Tamarack City entertains Stephenson.
• Ontonagon hosts Ironwood.

Hancock’s Isabella Hebert has been named the WestPAC Girls Basketball Player of the Year. Bulldogs coach Ward Helakoski was tabbed as coach of the year. They led Hancock to a 19-1 regular-season record. Their only loss was by one point to an excellent Escanaba team.

Houghton’s Stella Wickstrom earned Defensive Player of the Year honors.

Local players named to the Dream Team include Meghan Trewhella from Houghton, and Laina Kariniemi from Calumet.

Caitlyn Strom of the Copper Kings and Lana Aho of the Bulldogs were named to the All-Defensive Team.

Strom, Aho, Kaisa Salani of Hancock, Isabella Loukus of Calumet and Annika Peterson of Houghton were placed on the Copper Division First Team.

Hancock’s Cassie Pietila and Houghton’s Gwen Markham earned Honorable Mention votes.

Three members of the Houghton High School Alpine ski team have received All-U.P. honors. Eli Heathman was named to the boys first team, and Jack Haeussler to the second team. Rachel Sun was placed on the girls second team.

All three will be competing at the state meet Monday.

Heathman will also be taking part in the Eastern High School Championships at the Mittersill resort in New Hampshire in two weeks. Gremlins coach Larry Heathman will be coaching Team Michigan at that event.

College Basketball

The Finlandia University women’s basketball team opened the Coast to Coast Athletic Conference tournament yesterday with a 72-60 victory over Salisbury in the quarterfinals. Natalie Bartle scored 25 points, and Elli Djerf added 16. The fourth-seeded Lions will face unbeaten top seed Christopher Newport in the semifinals today at 5:00. UC Santa Cruz and Mary Washington will meet in the other semifinal.

The regular Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference season wraps up tomorrow, as Michigan Tech hosts Northern. The women’s game starts at 1:00, and the men’s contest at 3:00.

College Softball

The Finlandia softball team got off to a rough start at the Blue Angel Dome Invitational in Peoria, Illinois yesterday, falling 11-1 to Mount Mary, and 19-0 to Dominican.  The Lions will face Augustana this morning, and Elmhurst this afternoon.

College Hockey

The Central Collegiate Hockey Association concludes its regular season this weekend…
• Michigan Tech skates at Minnesota State tonight and tomorrow. The Huskies need to win both games to claim the MacNaughton Cup outright as the regular season champions.
• Northern Michigan closes its regular season tonight and tomorrow at Bowling Green.

GLHL

The Calumet Wolverines entertain the Eagle River Falcons tonight, and the Mosinee Papermakers tomorrow night. Both games begin at 7:30 at the Colosseum.

The Portage Lake Pioneers host the Falcons tomorrow at 7:30, and the Papermakers Sunday at noon.

NHL

The Red Wings’ surge continued with a 4-1 victory over the Rangers last night. Andrew Copp had a goal and two assists. Filip Zadina, Michael Rasmussen and Filip Hronek also scored. Ville Husso made 30 saves.

The Wings have won seven of their last eight games, and host the Lightning tomorrow. Coverage will begin at 7:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Pistons dropped a 108-106 decision to the Magic last night. Jaden Ivey’s three-pointer with five seconds remaining tied the contest, but Wendell Carter, Jr.’s putback of a missed shot with a tenth-of-a-second left on the clock was the game winner.

The Pistons host the Raptors tomorrow afternoon. Coverage begins at 11:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

The Tigers added some pitching depth yesterday by signing former Rockies reliever Ashton Goudeau to a minor-league deal.

Manager A.J. Hinch announced yesterday that Garrett Hill will start the Tigers’ Grapefruit League opener Saturday against the Phillies.

Spencer Turnbull pitched batting practice for Detroit yesterday. It was the first time he had faced hitters since undergoing Tommy John ligament replacement surgery 19 months ago.

NFL

There are reports that the Lions are ready to sign a multi-year contract extension with Defensive Coordinator Aaron Glenn.

Reports also indicated that Detroit will release veteran defensive lineman Michael Brockers. The move would open up $10 million in salary cap space.
