Heathman Wins State D2 Giant Slalom Crown – Tuesday Sports Wrap

High School

in boys basketball district tournament openers last night.
• Division Two, Houghton’s season ended with a 57-39 loss to Gladstone. The Gremlins trailed by just three points at halftime, but were outscored by the Braves 16-6 in the third quarter, and couldn’t recover. Isiah Lawson scored 16 for Houghton, and Luke Hill added 11. Drake Johnson had 23 points for Gladstone, and Lucas Brackett had 12.
• Division Three, District 65 – Calumet surged from behind late in the third quarter, and eliminated Hancock 57-50. Blake Tarvis paced the Copper Kings with 21 points, including 11 of 12 free throws in the final 90 seconds to seal the win. Gavin Sturos and Micah Pieti each scored 12. Alex Pietila led the Bulldogs with 15 points. Calumet will host Jeffers in a district semifinal game tomorrow night, with coverage at 5:40 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3. Ishpeming will play at Westwood in the other semifinal.
• Division Three, District 66 – Gwinn ended West Iron County’s season 51-40.
• Division Four, District 98 – Dollar Bay-Tamarack City edged Baraga 48-46. The Blue Bolts will host Lake Linden-Hubbell tomorrow at 6:00. L’Anse will play at Chassell at 6:00 in the other district semifinal.
• Division Four, District 97 – Ironwood dispatched Bessemer 67-44. The Red Devils will face Ewen-Trout Creek tomorrow at 7:30. Ontonagon will take on Wakefield-Marenisco tomorrow at 6:00. Both games will be played in Ewen.
• Division Four, District 99 – North Dickinson ousted Republic-Michigamme 72-41. The Nordics will entertain Forest Park in one semifinal tomorrow. Watersmeet will play at Norway in the other.

In girls high school basketball last night…
• Jeffers fell to Westwood 59-36. Megan Marta of the Patriots scored 19 points, and surpassed the 1000 career point mark.

On the girls schedule tonight…
• Houghton plays at Ewen-Trout Creek, with the varsity tip-off at 6:00. That game was added to make up for the lost Ontonagon game last Friday.
• Calumet travels to Iron Mountain.
• Hancock entertains West Iron County.
• Dollar Bay-Tamarack City hosts Bessemer for Senior/Parents Night.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell welcomes L’Anse for Parents Night.
• Chassell plays at Jeffers.
• Baraga visits Ontonagon.

Eli Heathman of the Houghton High School ski team won the giant slalom title at the Division Two state finals at Nub’s Nob yesterday. Heathman had the fastest time in the first run, and the sixth-fastest time in the second run. His combined time of 50.09 seconds was good enough to nose out Cadillac’s Brady Koenig by two-thirds of a second. Heathman did not finish his slalom run. Jack Haeussler from the Houghton team finished 19th in the giant slalom and 14th in the slalom. Both will compete at the Eastern High School Ski Championships at Attitash, New Hampshire, March 7th through 10th. See full results here.

College Hockey

Two Michigan Tech players have earned honors from the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. Blake Pietila was named Goaltender of the Week, after stopping 47-of-48 shots in the Huskies’ sweep of Bowling Green. Jack Works was named Forward of the Week, after logging four assists in the two-game series.

NHL

The Red Wings host the Capitals tonight. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

Josh Hart made a layup and sank a free throw in the closing seconds to lift the Knicks to a 113-111 victory over the Pistons last evening. The shots came after Donte DiVincenzo tackled Ausar Thompson to steal the ball at mid-court, and no foul was called. After the game, coach Monty Williams dubbed it “the worst call of the season.” Officiating crew chief James Williams admitted that they should have whistled a foul. Cade Cunningham led Detroit with 32 points. Jalen Duren collected 16 rebounds.

The Pistons visit the Bulls tonight.

MLB

The Tigers blanked the Astros 4-0 yesterday. Jack Flaherty and five relievers combined to limit Houston to just two hits – both in the late innings. Outfield prospect Brady Allen hit a three-run homer.

Half of the Tigers will face the Orioles this afternoon – Matt Manning will start. The other half will take on the Blue Jays. Casey Mize will start for Detroit. Coverage will begin at 1:00 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Brewers lost to the Reds 8-3 yesterday.

The Brewers will face the Angels this afternoon. Janson Junk will start.

NFL

The Lions have signed special teams standout Jalen Reeves-Maybin to a two-year extension Monday. Reports say the contract includes a $2.5 million signing bonus and has a maximum value of $8 million. That makes it the biggest contract ever awarded to a primarily special teams player.
