High School

In volleyball last night…

  • Houghton fell to Negaunee 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-20). Emmy Pietila had 23 digs for the Gremlins, Laney Johnson had 3 aces, 20 digs and 3 blocks, and Chloe Serafin had 7 kills, 6 blocks, 1 ace.
  • Calumet battled past Hancock 3-1 (25-18, 24-26, 25-15, 25-22). Allie Bjorn had 15 kills and 15 digs, Maddie Torola 6 kills and 9 digs, Jackie Kiilunen 11 kills, 12 digs and 4 aces, Jess Anderson 12 digs, Bella Coppo 10 assists and Millie Loukus 14 assists.
  • Lake Linden-Hubbell came from two sets down to edge Wakefield-Marenisco 3-2 (15-25, 19-25, 25-18, 26-24, 15-12). Cleo Milkey led the Lakes with 15 kills, 6 digs and 5 aces. Pelli Fortin had 5 kills and 4 blocks. Payton Goldsworthy had 18 assists and 4 kills.
  • At a triangular at Chassell, Chassell defeated Ontonagon 2-0 (25-7, 25-22). Dusty Lippold had 5 kills, 5 digs, 1 block and 1 ace for the Panthers, and Paige Danison had 2 kills, 5 digs and 4 aces. Jeffers defeated Chassell 2-0 (25-19, 25-10). For the Jets, Mia Nordstrom had 4 kills and 3 aces. Reegan Kinnunen was 11/11 serving with 3 aces. Elli Kuntze of the Panthers had 2 kills, 4 digs and 1 ace. Oriana Olson had 2 kills, 4 digs and 1 block. Jeffers dispatched Ontonagon 2-0 (25-14, 25-9). Mia Nordstrom had 9 kills for Jeffers, while Taylor Heinonen and Sammi Pennala added 3 each. Reegan Kinnunen had 15 digs. Montanna Heinonen was 9/9 serving with 2 aces.

  • Houghton competes at the Pulaski Tournament.

In boys soccer last evening…

  • Houghton mercied Iron Mountain 8-0. The Gremlins piled on seven goals in the first half. Ethan Heckel had a hat trick, plus an assist. Oliver Pap 2 goals. The Gremlins outshot the Mountaineers 15-1.

  • Houghton travels to Iron Mountain

At the Blue Bolts-Panthers cross country invitational yesterday…

  • Jeffers claimed an easy victory on the boys side. Dollar Bay-Tamarack City finished second, followed by Ironwood, Calumet and Hancock. Chassell’s Kalvin Kytta medaled. Landon Larson and Cameron Anderson of the Jets finished third and fourth, and Joshua Gaunt of the Blue Bolts was fifth.
  • Ewen-Trout Creek nosed out Hancock for the girls team title. Calumet placed third, followed by Chassell, Gogebic and Ironwood. Ironwood’s Aubrey Smith medaled. Ella Keranen of Hancock placed third, and Sylvia Aho from Chassell fourth.

In football this evening…

  • Houghton welcomes Westwood. Coverage will begin at 6:40 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf.
  • Calumet journeys to Menominee. Coverage will begin at 6:40 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3.
  • Hancock entertains Gladstone.
  • L’Anse hosts Manistique

  • Lake Linden-Hubbell welcomes Newberry.
  • Ontonagon hosts Rudyard.

College Football

The Michigan Tech football team visits Wisconsin-Oshkosh tomorrow.

The Northern Michigan football squad entertains Division III Alma College.

College Soccer

The Michigan Tech soccer team hosts Davenport University tonight at 6:00.

The NMU women’s soccer team entertains Grand Valley State this afternoon. The Wildcats men’s team plays at St. Cloud State tomorrow night.

College Volleyball

The Michigan Tech volleyball team plays at Purdue Northwest tonight, and Parkside tomorrow.

The Northern volleyball team competes at Parkside tonight, and Purdue Northwest tomorrow.

MLB

The Tigers had last night off, and begin a series in Baltimore tonight. Detroit is expected to employ another bullpen night. Corbin Burnes will start for the Orioles. Coverage will begin at 6:40 on 99-3 The Lift.

The Twins lost to the Guardians 3-2 in 10 innings last night, so Minnesota and Detroit are statistically tied for the final American League wild card playoff berth. The Twins own the tiebreaker. Both teams are two games behind the Royals, who hold the second wild card position. The win clinched the American League Central Division title for Cleveland.

The Brewers lost 5-1 to the Diamondbacks last night. Garrett Mitchell’s homer plated Milwaukee’s only run.

The Brewers continue that home set against the Diamondbacks tonight. Colin Rae will pitch against Zac Gallen.

NFL

In last night’s NFL contest, Aaron Rodgers threw two touchdown passes as the Jets stuffed the Patriots 24-3.

The Lions visit the Cardinals for a 4:25 game on Sunday on 99.3 The Lift. 

The Packers travel to Tennessee to take on the Titans Sunday at 1:00.

NHL

Moritz Seider will be joining the Red Wings at their training camp in Traverse City after all. Yesterday, he and the team signed a seven-year deal worth $8.55 million dollars. He was the only Detroit player still unsigned.
