Hancock’s Pizzi, Lewis Win Events at D2 Track Regional – Friday Sports Wrap

High School

In baseball yesterday…
• Houghton v Kingsford – canceled.
• Calumet v Hancock – canceled. 

On today’s baseball schedule…
• Jeffers entertains Ironwood
• Lake Linden-Hubbell welcomes Ontonagon.
• L’Anse hosts Ewen-Trout Creek.

Houghton’s baseball field will be dedicated tomorrow. The field is being named for John Bostwick, who was the head coach of Houghton High School’s first baseball team, and was instrumental in bringing high school ball to the Copper Country. Bostwick passed away in 2019. The ceremony will take place at 9:30 at the field, behind the high school. It will be followed by the first John Bostwick Memorial Tournament, which will feature Houghton, Calumet, Hancock and Westwood.

In softball yesterday…
• Calumet v Negaunee – canceled.

In softball today…
• Hancock plays at L’Anse, in a game that was rescheduled from April 23rd.
• Jeffers hosts Ironwood at Jeffers.
• Houghton entertains Gogebic.

In softball tomorrow…
• Houghton hosts Lake Linden-Hubbell and Westwood. We’ll broadcast the opening game between the Gremlins and Lakes beginning at 10:45 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf.

The Houghton girls soccer team plays at Marquette tomorrow.

At the Division Two regional track and field meet at Ishpeming yesterday…
• On the boys side, Ishpeming took the title. Hancock placed third, and Jeffers fourth. Myles Lewis of the Bulldogs won the shot put.
• On the girls side, West Iron County claimed the crown, by a single point over Ishpeming. Hancock finished fourth, and Jeffers fifth. Addison Pizzi of the Bulldogs took the 100-meter hurdles. Danica Shamion of the Wykons won the 100, 200 and 400-meter dashes and the high jump.

The Division Three regional at Lake Linden was postponed until Monday. The Copper Mountain Conference meet that was scheduled for Monday at Baraga has been pushed back to Wednesday.

NHL

In second-round NHL tournament play last night…
• The Rangers dispatched the Hurricanes 5-3. The Rangers win that series 4-2, and advance to the Eastern Conference finals.
• The Canucks shaded the Oilers 3-2 to take a 3-2 lead in their Western Conference series.

Tonight…
• The Bruins welcome the Panthers. Florida leads that Eastern Conference set 3-2.
• The Avalanche host the Stars. Dallas is up 3-2 in that Western Conference set.

NBA

In NBA Conference semifinal play last evening…
• The Timberwolves smothered the Nuggets 115-70. Denver scored nine points in the fourth quarter. That Western Conference series is tied 3-3, and will be decided Sunday.

Tonight…
• The Pacers welcome the Knicks. New York leads that Eastern Conference series 3-2.

MLB

The Tigers had yesterday off, and visit the Diamondbacks tonight. Tarik Skubal will start against Ryne Nelson. Coverage will begin at 9:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Brewers also had yesterday off, and visit the Astros this evening. Freddy Peralta will start against Hunter Brown.
