High School
In high school football yesterday…
– The Hancock Bulldogs held off an undermanned but scrappy Lake Linden-Hubbell team, and opened their high school football season with a 21-14 victory Saturday. Lake Linden dressed only 14 players, but controlled the line of scrimmage through much of the contest. Alex Norstrom of the Bulldogs broke off a run early in the second quarter, to give Hancock a 7-0 lead. Lake Linden responded with a Carter Crouch quarterback sneak with 205 remaining in the first half. The extra point attempt failed, and Hancock led 7-6 at halftime. The Lakes had five first downs in the first half to Hancock’s two. In the third quarter, a Lakes drive stalled just short of the goal line. The Bulldogs took over on downs, but Lake Linden-Hubbell forced a safety, and took an 8-7 lead. The Lakes increased the advantage to 14-7 with a run-based touchdown drive that ended with a two-yard run by Jake Marcotte midway through the fourth quarter. Down the stretch, though, the deeper and fresher Hancock squad took control. Aided by a 15-yard personal foul penalty and Nordstrom’s running, the Bulldogs tied the game with 3:57 remaining on a one-yard run by Aaron Barnes. The Lakes couldn’t sustain the ensuing drive, and had to give the ball back to the Bulldogs. With 31 seconds remaining, quarterback Colton Salani hit Barnes with a short pass over the middle, and Barnes raced 56 yards to the end zone for the winning score. Hancock entertains the Gogebic Miners (Ironwood, Bessemer and Wakefield-Marenisco) Friday evening. Lake Linden Hubbell plays at L’Anse Thursday – hear that game on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
