Hancock Wins Volleyball Regional, but Calumet Drops Heartbreaker – Friday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school volleyball regional finals last night.

  • In Division Three, Calumet’s season ended with a heartbreaking 3-2 (29-27, 25-22, 18-25, 21-25, 8-15) loss to Traverse City St. Francis. 
  • In Division Four, Hancock won its regional title by sweeping Forest Park 3-0. The Bulldogs will face Atlanta in the quarterfinals Tuesday at Manistique High School. The Huskies won their regional 3-0 over St. Ignace.

In high school hockey last night…

  • Hougton opened its season with a 7-2 victory over Hancock. 

Tonight…

  • Jeffers entertains Cheboygan at 7:00.

College Soccer

The semifinals of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women’s soccer tournament will be played tomorrow at Northern Michigan University. Second-seed Grand Valley State will meet third-seed Saginaw Valley State at 11:00. The top-seeded Wildcats will face fifth-seed Davenport at 2:00. The championship game will be played Sunday.

Two Michigan Tech soccer players have earned All-GLIAC honors. Forward Julia Pietila was named to the First Team, and defender Olivia Gette was an honorable mention.

Northern garnered two of the top three awards, with midfielder Brooke Pietila named the GLIAC Offensive Player of the Year, and Hannah Kastamo Defensive Player of the Year. Grand Valley’s Cailynn Junk earned Goalkeeper of the Year honors.

Other NMU players joining Pietila and Kastamo on the All-GLIAC First Team include Justina L’Esperance, Molly Pistorius and Maria Storm. Goalkeeper Sally Patton was placed on the Second Team, and Angelina Perritano was an Honorable Mention.

College Football

The Michigan Tech football team wraps up its season tomorrow at Saginaw Valley State.

The Northern Michigan squad concludes its campaign at Wayne State.

College Volleyball

The MTU volleyball team ends its regular season with matches at Saginaw Valley State tonight, and Lake Superior State tomorrow.

The NMU team plays at Lake Superior State tonight, and Saginaw Valley State tomorrow.

College Hockey

The Tech hockey team has this weekend off.

NMU plays at Minnesota State tonight and tomorrow night.

College Basketball

The MTU women’s basketball team welcomes Bemidji State today at 5:00, and Minnesota Crookston tomorrow at 3:00.

The Tech men’s team plays at Winona State tomorrow, and Concordia-St. Paul Sunday.

The NMU women’s team hosts Minnesota Crookston today at 3:00, and Bemidji State tomorrow at 3:00.

The Northern men’s squad faces Illinois-Springfield at Wisconsin Dells tomorrow afternoon.

NHL

The Wings visit the Ducks tonight. Coverage will start at 9:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Pistons visit the Raptors this evening.

NFL

In last night’s NFL contest, the Eagles scored 20 points in the fourth quarter, and downed the Commanders 26-18. 

The Lions entertain the Jaguars in a 1:00 game Sunday. Coverage will begin at noon on 99.3 The Lift.

The Packers visit the Bears for a 1:00 contest.
