Hancock Wins Regional Softball Crown – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School

The Hancock softball team won its second straight regional title with a pair of victories at Norway Saturday. The Bulldogs won their semifinal match against Ishpeming 9-6. The Hematites opened an early lead with three runs in the first inning. Hancock surged ahead with four runs in the bottom of the second, powered by a two-run double from Sydnie Scholie, and RBI singles from Megan Pelto and Mallory Sporalski. Scholie and Pelto each finished with three RBI. Sadie Biekkola got the win. The Bulldogs then held off the Gogebic Miners 6-4 in the championship game. Hancock built an early lead with a run in the first, three in the second, and two in the fifth. The Miners made a late challenge, scoring three in the bottom of the seventh, but Biekkola struck out Kenly Anderson to end the game. Biekkola again earned the win, and drove in three runs.

The Bulldogs will face Hillman in a state tournament quarterfinal game Tuesday at 5:00 at Pickford High School. The Tigers won their regional crown with a 17-2 rout of Inland Lakes.

The Houghton softball team fell 9-2 to Grayling in their Division III regional semifinal in Gladstone Saturday. The Vikings scored seven runs in the first inning to take control early. After being held hitless for the first five innings, Kenzie Collard and Romi Mattson each drove home a run to put the Gremlins on the board in the top of the sixth.

Gladstone won the regional title, defeating Grayling 2-0 in the championship game. The Braves will face Evart in the quarterfinals Tuesday at Cadillac.

In baseball, Norway won its Division IV regional title Saturday, with a 7-1 victory over Onaway. The Knights head to the state semifinals in East Lansing Friday, where they will face Marine City Cardinal Mooney. In Division III, Gladstone fell to Charlevoix 12-1 in a regional semifinal Saturday.

MLB

The Tigers couldn’t hold an early lead, and lost 5-4 to the Brewers Saturday. Jackson Chourio’s two-run double off Shelby Miller in the top of the sixth completed the Milwaukee comeback.

The Tigers will host the Brewers again today. Tarik Skubal will start against Bryse Wilson. Coverage will begin at 1:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

Colt Keith left yesterday’s game after colliding with Akil Baddoo while chasing a pop fly. Keith suffered a bruised knee, but team officials are optimistic the injury isn’t serious.

Milwaukee has signed pitcher Elieser Hernández to a one-year contract. Hernández was 0-1 with an 8.38 ERA this season in five appearances with the Dodgers. He chose free agency when L.A. designated him for assignment last week. To make room on the roster, James Meeker was sent down to Nashville.

NBA

The NBA championship series continues tonight, as the Celtics host the Mavericks. Boston leads the series 1-0.

NHL

The Panthers blanked the Oilers 3-0 in the opening game of the Stanley Cup series Saturday night. Game two will be played tomorrow night in Florida.
