Hancock Wins Hockey Regional; Tech Takes MacNaughton Cup – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School
Hancock won the Regional hockey title Saturday afternoon, with a 4-1 victory over Houghton. The Bulldogs will face Sault Ste. Marie in the quarterfinals Wednesday evening in Marquette. The Blue Devils advanced by defeating Cadillac 3-2 Saturday night. Our pregame coverage will begin around 6:30 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

MTU/NMU
The Michigan Tech hockey team claimed a share of the MacNaugton Cup for the first time since the 1975-76 season by defeating Northern Michigan University 5-1 Saturday night.  The Huskies started their assault early, when Tyler Heinonen scored on a power play off a Joel L’Esperance feed just 2:22 into the game. Jake Lucchini scored the eventual game-winner 12:49 into the second period, when he tipped in a Matt Roy shot. Max Vallis and Reid Sturos provided insurance goals, and Shane Hannah iced the game with a power play tally with four seconds remaining. Jamie Phillips made 27 saves.

The victory, coupled with Minnesota State’s 1-0 loss to Bemidji State Saturday night, lifted MTU into a tie with MSU atop the standings. The Huskies own the tiebreaker, and will be seeded first in the upcoming WCHA tournament. They will open a best-of-three series at home against Alaska Friday and Saturday nights, with a third game Sunday if needed. Tech blanked Northern Michigan University 4-0 in their final regular-season game at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena Friday night.

Northern Michigan University is seeded fifth in the WCHA tournament, and will open the playoffs at fourth-seeded Ferris State Friday night.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University softball team finished its spring trip to Clermont, Florida, without a victory. Saturday, the Lions lost to the University of Mount Union 7-2, and Cornell College 21-1.

In Fort Meyers, Florida, the Finlandia baseball team fell 12-2 to Eastern Nazarene College and 21-8 to Rockford University on Saturday The Lions will take today off, and face Gettysburg College and Olivet College on Monday.

GLHL
The Calumet Wolverines lost 10-4 to the West Bend Bombers Saturday night. Mike Babcock scored twice in the losing effort. The Wolverines fell 6-3 to the Fond du Lac Bears Friday night.

The Portage Lake Pioneers fell to the Bears 5-2 Saturday night. Ryan Sullivan and Matt Mantta scored for Portage. The score of the Pioneers’ game at West Bend Friday night was not reported.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings will play at Chicago this afternoon. Face-off is at 5:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons dropped a 102-89 decision to the New York Knicks Saturday night. New York broke the game open with a strong second quarter. Andre Drummond had 21 points and 16 rebounds for Detroit. The Pistons host the Trailblazers tonight.

MLB
In spring training baseball, the Detroit Tigers lost to the Washington Nationals 8-4 Saturday. Jordan Zimmermann pitched two scoreless innings, and left with a runner on and two outs in the third. Bruce Rondon relieved, and gave up a two-run homer. The Tigers face the Marlins this afternoon. The first pitch is at 1:05 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

Anibal Sanchez threw 25 pitches off a mound on Saturday, and said his arm felt good. He’s been battling triceps inflammation.

The Milwaukee Brewers and Oakland Athletics battled to an 8-8 tie on Saturday. Jimmy Nelson pitched two scoreless innings in his first spring start. The Brewers play Cleveland this afternoon.

Great Bear Chase
A record 657 skiers competed in the UP Health System Great Bear Chase Saturday on the Swedetown Trails.

Great Bear Chase 2016 LogoNick Power from Minneapolis won the 50k Skiathlon, nearly two-and-a-half minutes ahead of Chris Pappathopoulos of Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. David Joda of Houghton placed seventh in the men’s division. Rosie Frankowski from Anchorage, Alaska, was the top female. Joan Rundman from Hancock placed 10th in the women’s division.

In the 50k Freestyle, Tristan Schouten of Plymouth, Wisconsin finished about two-and-a-half minutes ahead of Mark Ousdigian of St. Paul. Ken Wikgren of Lac La Belle was the top local finisher, at 11th in the men’s division. Women’s honors went to Paulette Niemi of Ironwood.

Luke Bodewes from Hazelhurst, Wisconsin, took the 50k Classic with a four-minute edge over Beau Larson from Minneapolis. Ryan Washington of Houghton was third. Chandra Ziegler from Crystal Falls earned the women’s title.

Nathan Kock from Merrill, Wisconsin, finished first in the 25k Freestyle, 28 seconds ahead of Ian Ivens of Champlin, Minnesota. Evan Griffith of Calumet placed eighth in the men’s division. Joellen Torresani of Middleton, Wisconsin was the women’s division champion. Liisa Halonen of Calumet placed third.

In the 25k Classic, Peter Scheller of Champlin, Wisconsin took first place, 45 seconds ahead of Thomas Ziegler of Marquette. Nicole Gilman of Manitowish Waters, Wisconsin, was the fastest woman.

Gavin Martell of Grand View, Wisconsin, won the 10k Freestyle, eight seconds ahead of Elijah Hancock of Cable, Wisconsin. Joe Wood of Houghton placed fourth. Victoria Shreve from Ironwood won the women’s division, five seconds ahead of Maria Velat from Chassell.

The 10k Classic went to Dalton Collins of Washburn, Wisconsin. Aaron Arthur of Cable, Wisconsin, finished more than two-and-a-half minutes off the pace. Bob Richards of Houghton placed fourth in the men’s division. Carley Hintz won the women’s division, more than three minutes ahead of Celeste Teichmiller. Both are from Arbor Vitae, Wisconsin. Emma Dlutkowski of Atlantic Mine placed seventh.
