Hancock Volleyball Heads to Semifinals – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School

The Hancock High School volleyball team is headed to the state tournament semifinals, after a 3-0 victory over Atlanta in last night’s quarterfinal match. The Bulldogs will face Clarkston Everest Collegiate, which dispatched Ubly in straight sets last evening. The semifinal match will be played tomorrow at noon at Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek. Hancock is the only public school to reach the final four. Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart and St. Joseph Our Lady of the Lake Catholic will play in the other semifinal. 

The Jeffers hockey team routed Negaunee 11-2 last night. Brogan Turner had two goals and four assists, and Cameron Anderson tallied one goal and three assists. 

College Volleyball

Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan open the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference volleyball tournament tonight.

  • The fifth-seeded Huskies play at fourth-seeded Wayne State.
  • The third-seeded Wildcats host sixth-seeded Parkside.

NHL

The Red Wings entertain the Islanders tomorrow. Because of NFL football on 99.3 The Lift, coverage will start at 6:45 on KBear 102.3.

NBA

The Pistons visit the Hornets tomorrow.

MLB

Colt Keith has been named the Tigers’ Rookie of the Year, in voting by the Detroit Sports Media Association.

Stephen Vogt of the Guardians has been voted American League Manager of the Year. Vogt led Cleveland to the American League Central Division title. Matt Quatraro of the Royals finished second, and Detroit manager A.J. Hinch came in third.

Pat Murphy of the Brewers was honored as the National League Manager of the Year, in his first season after taking over for Craig Counsell.

To the surprise of no one, Milwaukee shortstop Willy Adames declined the team’s qualifying contract offer. He becomes a free agent, and is expected to draw significant interest.
