Hancock Volleyball Falls in State Semifinals – Friday Sports Wrap

High School

The Hancock High School volleyball team’s season ended with a 3-0 (25-10, 25-16, 25-13) loss to defending state champion Clarkston Everest Collegiate in the semifinals of the Division Four state tournament yesterday. The Bulldogs conclude the best campaign in school history with a record of 25-7-2. Everest Collegiate remains unbeaten, and will face St. Joseph Our Lady of the Lake Catholic in an all-private school championship game tomorrow. 

The Jeffers hockey team blanked Manistique 6-0 last night.

On tonight’s hockey schedule…

  • Houghton entertains Traverse City Central. Coverage begins at 6:40 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf.
  • Calumet opens its season at home against Howell, with coverage at 6:40 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3.

College Volleyball

The Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan volleyball teams are in Big Rapids for the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament. Semifinals will be played tomorrow, with the Huskies facing top-seed Ferris State at noon, and the Wildcats taking on second-seed Grand Valley State at 2:30. The championship game will be played Sunday.

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech hockey team hosts Minnesota State tonight at 7:07, and tomorrow at 6:07. The Huskies are ranked 20th in this week’s USA Hockey Coaches Poll, and the Mavericks are 17th.

The NMU hockey squad has the weekend off.

College Basketball

The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team plays at St. Cloud State tomorrow, and Minnesota Duluth Sunday.

The Tech men’s team plays at Minnesota Duluth tonight, and Minnesota State Moorhead tomorrow.

The NMU women’s team plays at Minnesota Duluth tomorrow, and St. Cloud State Sunday.

The Northern men’s team plays at Minnesota State Moorhead tonight, and Minnesota Duluth tomorrow.

NHL

Lucas Raymond’s goal in the final minute of regulation lifted the Red Wings to a 2-1 victory over the Islanders last night. Raymond’s tally came just four minutes after Jonatan Berggren had tied the game. Alex Lyon made 22 saves.

The Wings welcome the Bruins tomorrow. Coverage will start at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Hornets shaded the Pistons 123-121 in overtime last evening. Cade Cunningham had 27 points and 10 assists for Detroit, but left late in the contest after suffering a hip injury in a hard fall. He’ll be evaluated today. Tobias Harris added 26 points.

The Pistons visit the Magic tomorrow.

NFL

 Nick Chubb’s two-yard touchdown run through the snow in the final minute gave the Browns a 24-19 upset win over the Steelers last evening. 

The Lions visit the Colts in a 1:00 game Sunday on 99.3 The Lift.

The Packers entertain the 49ers in a 4:25 contest. Green Bay will be without cornerback Jaire Alexander, who is recovering from a knee injury. The injury does not appear to be serious enough to end his season, but it’s not known when he’ll return.

The Rams host the Eagles in the Sunday night game on 99.3 The Lift.
