High School
In high school hockey…
– At the Marquette Classic, Hancock scored two goals in the closing seconds, and defeated Ann Arbor-Pioneer 6-4 Friday evening. Danny Hill’s tally with 15 seconds remaining was the game-winner. Zack Ahola sealed it with an empty-net goal – his second of the night. Hunter Kero, Jack Fenton and Casey Nicholas also scored for the Bulldogs. Marquette edged Sault Ste. Marie 1-0. Today, the Bulldogs face Sault Ste. Marie at 11:00, and Marquette takes on Ann Arbor Pioneer at 1:00. You can see video highlights from the Hancock game here.
– At the Jeffers New Year Tournament at MacInnes Arena, Escanaba defeated Cheboygan 6-2 Friday night. Jeffers doubled up Pinckney 8-4. Today, the consolation match between Pinckney and Cheboygan will take place at 1:00, and the championship game between Jeffers and Escanaba will begin at 3:00.

In girls’ basketball, Houghton got past Northland Pines 43-40 Friday night.
Michigan Tech Hoops, Hockey Earn Wins
Both Michigan Tech basketball teams claimed victories at Ohio Dominican Friday night. Ben Stelzer scored 20, as the Huskies’ men’s team beat the Panthers 84-72. The 20th-ranked women’s team led by 15 at halftime, then held on to earn a 64-57 win. Jillian Richie scored 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Tech. Both Huskies teams play at Tiffin tomorrow.
The fifth-ranked Michigan Tech hockey team blew out Wisconsin 8-1 Friday night. Tanner Kero and Blake Pietila each scored twice for the Huskies. Tech skates at Wisconsin again tonight. See video highlights of Friday’s game here.
Northern Michigan
The Northern Michigan University women’s basketball team rode a strong second half to an 83-70 victory at Tiffin Friday night. The Wildcats led by just one point at halftime. Alyssa Colla scored 26 for NMU. The Northern men’s team dropped an 85-81 double-overtime decision at Tiffin. Alex Sorenson led the Wildcats with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Northern plays at Ohio Dominican on Sunday.
Third-ranked Minnesota State scored three goals in the second period, and beat Northern Michigan 4-1 Friday night. Those teams play again tonight in Marquette.
Finlandia
The Finlandia University women’s basketball team will entertain Mount Mary University this afternoon. Tip-off is at 1:00 at the Paavo Nurmi Center.
Pioneers Defeat Wolverines
The Portage Lake Pioneers defeated the Calumet Wolverines 7-2 Friday night in the first game of a home-and-home series. Tonight’s game begins at 7:30 at the Colosseum. Tomorrow’s contest starts at 7:30 at Dee Stadium.
NHL – Red Wings Head West
The Red Wings will open a west coast trip at Vancouver tonight.
NBA – Pistons Prepare for Knicks
The rejuvenated Pistons defeated the Knicks 97-81 Friday night. Brandon Jennings scored 29 points. Andre Drummond pulled in 20 rebounds. Detroit led by 33 points early in the fourth quarter, when coach Stan Van Gundy began resting his regulars. The Pistons have won four in a row, and host the Kings tomorrow afternoon.
NFL Playoffs
The NFL playoffs open today. The Cardinals take on the Panthers at 4:35. The Ravens play at Pittsburgh at 8:15. Tomorrow, the Bengals kick off at Indianapolis at 1:05, and the Lions play at Dallas at 4:40. Hear all of this weekend’s NFL playoff games on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
