Calumet New Zamboni 2014-11-29Hancock Takes Opening Copper Island Classic Game
In high school hockey, Hancock opened the Copper Island Classic with a 5-2 victory over Calumet Friday night. Hunter Kero scored twice for the Bulldogs. Danny Hill had a goal and an assist. Dylan Paavola and Cory Tourtilott also scored. Trevor Johnson and Ryan Nelson scored for the Copper Kings. Hancock and Calumet will finish the two-game Classic tonight. The Calumet Hockey Association will unveiled its new Zamboni at Friday night’s game. The $98,000 ice surfacing machine is the third step in a series of capital investments being made by the Calumet Hockey Association. A new ice plant was installed last year, and the former clock and scoreboard from MacInnes Arena was also refurbished and hung from the ceiling. The next step will be replacement of the aging boards and glass, a project that could cost more than $195,000.

Munising Football 2014-11-29Mustangs Fall in Football Final
Munising lost to Muskegon Catholic Central 31-6 Friday morning in the championship game of the Michigan 11-man high school football tournament. It’s the second state title in a row for the Crusaders.

MTU Hockey Wins at Huntsville
The fifth-ranked Michigan Tech hockey team bounced back from last week’s losses to post a 4-2 victory at Alabama-Huntsville Friday night. Dylan Steman and Shane Hanna each had a goal and an assist for the Huskies. The Chargers kept pace early, tying the game at two on a power play goal midway through the second period. Hanna’s goal less than 90 seconds later reestablished the lead. The Huskies outshot the Chargers 30-14. Those teams play again tonight in Huntsville.

The Huskies’ women’s basketball team hosts Minnesota State this afternoon. Tip-off is at 2:00 at the SDC.

The Tech men’s basketball team opened the Southwest Minnesota State Classic with an easy 74-59 victory over the host Mustangs Friday night. The Huskies led 44-27 at halftime, and were never challenged. Jordan Chartier led all scorers with 17 points. Jason Hawke added 14. The Huskies will face Wayne State from Nebraska tonight.

NMU Hoops Falls to Wayne State
NMU Athletics LogoThat Wayne State team opened the Southwest Minnesota State Classic with a 70-63 victory over Northern Michigan University’s men’s team Friday night. The Wildcats face the host Mustangs tonight.

The 19th-ranked Northern Michigan hockey team lost 3-0 Friday night at Alaska-Fairbanks. All of the Nanooks’ goals came in the second period. Those teams play in Fairbanks again tonight.

Finlandia Lions New LogoFinlandia Men Blanked by LFC
The Finlandia men’s hockey team was shut out 5-0 by Lake Forest College Friday evening. Those teams play again at 4:00 this afternoon at the Houghton County Arena.

The Lions’ men’s basketball team plays at Northwood University this afternoon, and at Concordia-Ann Arbor tomorrow.

The women’s basketball team will play at Calvin College today, and will face Concordia-Ann Arbor in Grand Rapids tomorrow.

NHL – Red Wings Edge New Jersey
The Red Wings came from behind to force a shootout, then edged the Devils 5-4 Friday night. New Jersey opened up a 4-1 lead early in the second period against rookie goalie Petr Mrazek, but Mrazek regrouped, and held the Devils scoreless for the rest of the contest. Drew Miller’s goal midway through the third period tied the game. Gustav Nyquist’s goal in the third round of the shootout was the game-winner. The Wings host the Canucks tomorrow afternoon.

NBA – Pistons Lose Seventh Straight
The Pistons’ losing streak reached seven games, with a 104-88 loss to the Bucks Friday night. Playing without John Henson and Zaza Pachulia, the Bucks’ bench outscored Detroit’s reserves 69-13. Andre Drummond scored 26 for Detroit, and grabbed 20 rebounds. The Pistons entertain the Warriors tomorrow afternoon.

The Packers host the Patriots tomorrow afternoon.
