In high school hockey…
– Hancock drew first blood in the annual Copper Island Classic, defeating Calumet 4-3 Friday night. Game two of the total-goals series will be played tonight at 7:00 at the Colosseum.
– L’Anse entertains the Calumet JV team tonight at 7:00.
MTU
The Michigan Tech hockey team spotted Alaska-Fairbanks an early one goal lead, then scored four unanswered goals to defeat the Nanooks 4-1 Friday night. Tyler Heinonen, Jake Lucchini, Joel L’Esperance and Chris Leibinger scored for the Huskies. Angus Redmond made 22 saves, and earned his seventh victory of the season in net. Those teams play again tonight in Fairbanks.
The MTU women’s basketball team plays at the Thanksgiving Classic at the University of Southern Indiana this weekend. The Huskies will face Bellarmine University this afternoon, and the host team tomorrow.
The MTU men’s basketball team visits Minnesota-Duluth this afternoon.
NMU
The Northern Michigan University hockey team skated to a 2-2 draw with Nebraska-Omaha Friday night. The teams played an unofficial three-on-three overtime period, in which NMU scored to gain an off-the-books victory. The Wildcats and Mavericks will play in Marquette again tonight.
The NMU women’s basketball team dropped its first game at the Puma Thanksgiving Classic at St. Joseph’s College in Rensselaer, Indiana Friday,, falling to the host team 60-44. The Wildcats will face Wisconsin-Parkside today.
The NMU men’s basketball team has the weekend off.
Finlandia
The Finlandia women’s basketball team lost 82-52 to Calvin College Friday night at the Paavo Nurmi Center. The Knights broke the game open with a 12-point run late in the second quarter. Former Houghton High School star Kelsie Richards led the Lions with 22 points. Finlandia will host Carroll University tomorrow at 1:00.
The Finlandia men’s hockey team visits Wisconsin-Superior tonight.
NHL
Mike Green’s goal in overtime lifted the Detroit Red Wings to a 5-4 victory over the New Jersey Devils Friday night. Green scored off a pass from Frans Nielsen, who also scored twice early in the game. The Wings outshot the Devils 33-19. Detroit goalie Jimmy Howard left the game in the first period with a lower body injury after his skate got caught in the ice. After the game, coach Jeff Blashill said Howard will likely be out for a week. Petr Mrazek replaced him. Detroit brought Jared Coreau up from the Grand Rapids Griffins as a backup. The Wings host the Montreal Canadiens tonight. Faceoff is at 7:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
NBA
The Detroit Pistons won their second-straight game Friday night, defeating the Los Angeles Clippers 108-97. Marcus Morris led a balanced Detroit attack with 17 points. The victory avenged a 114-82 blowout loss Detroit suffered at LA several weeks ago. The Pistons play at Oklahoma City tonight.
