In high school hockey…
– At the Marquette Classic, Matt Sanregret’s hat trick led Hancock to a 5-1 victory over Sault Ste. Marie on Saturday. Ann Arbor Pioneer defeated Marquette 2-1 in Saturday’s other game. On Friday, Hancock scored two goals in the closing seconds, and defeated Ann Arbor-Pioneer 6-4. Danny Hill’s tally with 15 seconds remaining was the game-winner. Zach Ahola sealed it with an empty-net goal – his second of the night. Hunter Kero, Jack Fenton and Casey Nicholas also scored for the Bulldogs. Marquette edged Sault Ste. Marie 1-0.
– At the Jeffers New Year Tournament at MacInnes Arena on Saturday, Jeffers fell to Cheboygan 4-2, and Escanaba defeated Pinckney 7-4. On Friday, Escanaba defeated Cheboygan 6-2, and Jeffers doubled up Pinckney 8-4.
– Robert Erkkila’s natural hat trick led the way as Calumet blanked Kingsford 8-0 Saturday night at the Colosseum. The game ended 8:12 into the third because of the mercy rule. Ian Carroll and Logan Storm shared the shutout for the Kings. Trevor Johnson also had a goal and two assists for Calumet.
In girls’ basketball, Houghton got past Northland Pines 43-40 Friday night.
Michigan Tech Hockey Shut Out
The fifth-ranked Michigan Tech hockey team blew out Wisconsin 8-1 Friday night. Tanner Kero and Blake Pietila each scored twice for the Huskies. On Saturday, the Badgers turned the table, blanking Tech 2-0. Wisconsin goalie Joel Rumpel stopped 47 shots to hand the Huskies their first shutout of the season.
Both Michigan Tech basketball teams claimed victories at Ohio Dominican Friday night. Ben Stelzer scored 20, as the Huskies’ men’s team beat the Panthers 84-72. The 20th-ranked women’s team led by 15 at halftime, then held on to earn a 64-57 win. Jillian Richie scored 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Tech. Both Huskies teams play at Tiffin today.
Northern Michigan Hockey Ties MSU
Northern Michigan scored two power play goals to earn a 2-2 tie with third-ranked Minnesota State Saturday night. Friday night, the Mavericks scored three goals in the second period, and beat the Wildcats 4-1.
The Northern Michigan University women’s basketball team rode a strong second half to an 83-70 victory at Tiffin Friday night. The Wildcats led by just one point at halftime. Alyssa Colla scored 26 for NMU. The Northern men’s team dropped an 85-81 double-overtime decision at Tiffin. Alex Sorenson led the Wildcats with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Both Northern teams play at Ohio Dominican today.
Finlandia Women Stuff Mount Mary
The Finlandia University women’s basketball team shut down Mount Mary University 87-32 Saturday afternoon. Paige Yoho scored 21 for the Lions, and Valerie Rajala grabbed 10 rebounds.
Pioneers Take Two from Wolverines
The Calumet Wolverines took a 2-1 lead into the third period, but the Portage Lake Pioneers came back to earn a 3-2 victory Saturday night at Dee Stadium. Eric Bausano and Mike Babcock scored for Calumet. Portage Lake’s stats were not reported. In the first game of the home-and-home series, the Pioneers defeated the Wolverines 7-2 Friday night.
NHL – Red Wings Fall at Vancouver
Ryan Miller stopped 30 shots, as the Vancouver Canucks defeated the Detroit Red Wings 4-1 Saturday night. Tomas Tatar scored Detroit’s only goal. The Wings skate at Edmonton Tuesday night. Faceoff is at 9:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
NBA – Pistons Prepare for Kings
The Detroit Pistons have won four in a row, and host the Kings this afternoon.
NFL Playoffs
In opening-day NFL playoffs action yesterday, the Panthers upended the Cardinals 27-16, and the Ravens eliminated the Steelers 30-17. Today, the Bengals kick off at Indianapolis at 1:05, and the Lions play at Dallas at 4:40. Hear both games on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
