High School

In high school softball yesterday…
• Hancock defeated Lake Linden 9-3. Sadie Biekkola earned the win, striking out four as she went the distance, and hitting a home run. Sofie Freeman had two hits and Sydnie Scholie drove in four runs to lead the Bulldog offense. For the Lakes, Payton Goldsworthy struck out 11, and also had two hits, including a three-run homer. Marissa Sullivan also had two hits for the Lakes.

In softball this afternoon, weather and field conditions permitting…
• Jeffers plays at Calumet.
• L’Anse hosts Iron Mountain.

In baseball yesterday…
• Calumet’s games at Jeffers were postponed to today.

Also on today’s schedule…
• Houghton plays at Hancock.

The Houghton girls soccer team earned its first-ever varsity victory with a 2-0 shutout of Iron Mountain yesterday. Cece Butler and Robin Kisiel scored.

In track and field today, some local teams are competing at the Lakes Invitational at Lake Linden. Others are taking part in the Ontonagon meet.

NHL

In opening-round NHL tournament play last night…
• The Stars edged the Golden Knights 3-2. Dallas leads that series 3-2.
• The Oilers dispatched the Kings 4-3. Edmonton wins that series 4-1.

Tonight…
• The Maple Leafs host the Bruins. Bostin leads that series 3-2.

NBA

In opening-round NBA tournament play last evening…
• The Celtics ousted the Heat with a 118-84 victory. Boston wins that series 4-1.
• The Mavericks shut down the Clippers 123-93. Dallas leads that series 3-2.

Tonight…
• The Bucks visit the Pacers. Indiana is up 3-2 in that series.
• The 76ers entertain the Knicks. New York leads that series 3-2.

MLB

Matt Vierling homered, drove in three runs, and scored twice, as the Tigers stopped the Cardinals 4-1 yesterday. Kenda Maeda earned the win, giving up a run on four hits over six innings.

The Tigers have today off, and visit the Yankees tomorrow night. Coverage will begin at 6:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

Detroit closed out the first month of the season with a record of 17-13 – their best start since 2016.

The Brewers routed the Rays 7-1 yesterday. Willy Adames belted a pair of two-run homers. Colin Rea scattered four hits over six shutout innings.

The Brewers also have today off, and visit the Cubs tomorrow.

Milwaukee played last night’s game without manager Pat Murphy. He began serving a two-game suspension, following Tuesday’s mid-game brawl. Pitchers Abner Uribe and Freddy Peralta were also suspended – Peralta for five games, and Uribe for six. Team officials say they’ll appeal both of those terms. Uribe won’t get to start serving his suspension immediately, anyway – he’s been sent back down to Nashville. Rays center fielder Jose Siri was given a three-game suspension.
