In high school baseball yesterday…
– Calumet swept a doubleheader at Negaunee, 5-1 and 10-9 – the second game was called after four innings, because of rain.
– The L’Anse-Jeffers game was canceled because of poor field conditions – no make-up date has been provided.
On the baseball schedule today…
– Hancock plays at Calumet.
– Houghton travels to Escanaba.
In track and field, Hancock, Houghton, Calumet, Lake Linden-Hubbell, Chassell, Dollar Bay-Tamarack City and Jeffers will run at the Houghton County Invitational at Calumet today.
MLB
The Detroit Tigers blew a big early lead, and lost to the Baltimore Orioles 7-5 last evening. The Tigers built a 5-0 advantage by the middle of the sixth inning, thanks to two RBI each from Miguel Cabrera and Victor Martinez. Baltimore scored two in the bottom of the sixth, chasing starter Mike Pelfrey. Pelfrey had given up just three hits over the first five innings, and turned in his best outing of the season. The Orioles then batted around in the seventh, scoring five times against relievers Alex Wilson and Justin Wilson.
The Tigers have lost nine of their last 10, and continue that set at Baltimore tonight. Justin Verlander will start against Chris Tillman. Hear the first pitch at 7:05 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
Before the game, the Tigers called up outfielder Steven Moya from Toledo. Moya started the game in left field, and Justin Upton moved to center. Reliever Blaine Hardy was sent down to make room.
The Milwaukee Brewers collected eight hits, but couldn’t score in a 3-0 defeat by the San Diego Padres. Jimmy Nelson took the tough loss, giving up two runs on five hits over eight innings.
The Brewers host the Padres again tonight. Junior Guerra will pitch against Christian Friedrich, who is coming up from Triple-A to make his San Diego debut.
NHL
The conference finals are set in the NHL playoffs. Last night, the Sharks blanked the Predators 5-0 in the seventh game of their second-round series. The Sharks and Blues will meet for the Western Conference crown. The Penguins and Lightning will face off in the Eastern Conference final.
NBA
The Thunder advanced to the NBA Western Conference final with a 113-99 victory over the Spurs in game six of their second-round series last night. They’ll face the Warriors for the conference title. In the Eastern Conference, the Raptors face the Heat tonight. Toronto leads that second-round series three games to two.
