Hancock, Jeffers earn VB Tourney Wins – Tuesday Sports Wrap

High School

In the opening round of the high school volleyball tournament last night…
– In Division Two, Houghton finished its season with a 3-0 loss to Kingsford.
– In Division Three,
Hancock edged West Iron County 3-2. The Bulldogs will host Calumet tomorrow night. L’Anse’s season ended with a 3-1 loss to Ironwood. The Red Devils will face Iron Mountain tomorrow night.
– In Division Four, Jeffers advanced with a 3-1 (
21-25, 25-12, 25-14, 25-18) victory over Baraga. MaKenna Harris served 13 in a row with two aces to give the Jets a huge lead in the second game. The Jets will host Lake Linden-Hubbell tomorrow night. Chassell will entertain Dollar Bay.

Finlandia

The Finlandia University women’s hockey team skates at Northland College tonight.

MTU

Michigan Tech’s new esports program has a director. Kaitlyn Roose is the current President and Co-Founder of the Esports Club at Michigan Tech. She is pursuing her PhD in Applied Cognitive Science and Human Factors Psychology. Her task will be to build the first varsity-level college esports program in the state.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings’ struggles continued last night, with a 6-1 loss to the Nashville Predators. Andreas Athanasiou’s first goal of the season gave Detroit an early lead, before the Predators buried them with five goals in the second period. Jimmy Howard gave way to Jonathan Bernier midway through the contest.

The Wings have won just one of their last 12 games, and visit the New York Rangers tomorrow. Pregame coverage begins at 7:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons dropped a mistake-filled 115-99 contest to the Washington Wizards last night. Luke Kennard scored 24 points, but committed five of Detroit’s 21 turnovers. The Pistons continue to take the floor without Blake Griffin and all of their three point guards – Reggie Jackson, Derrick Rose and Tim Frazier – who are out with injuries.

The Pistons host the New York Knicks tomorrow night.

NFL
