High School

In baseball yesterday…
• Hancock downed Jeffers 5-1.

On today’s baseball schedule, weather permitting…
• Houghton welcomes Kingsford.
• Calumet plays at Hancock. Coverage will begin at 3:45 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3.

In softball yesterday…
• Houghton and Hancock split their doubleheader. Clea Ollenkato homered on the first pitch as the Gremlins won the opener 8-1. Houghton went on to score five in the first inning. Estella Soumis got the complete-game win, allowing just four hits. Soumis also two hits and drove in three runs. Kaisa Salani had two hits for the Bulldogs. Hancock rebounded with a 2-1 victory in a pitchers duel in game two. The Bulldogs managed just two hits off Romi Mattson, but got one run home on a sacrifice bunt, and another on a passed ball. Sadie Biekkola allowed four hits to get the win for Hancock.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell swept Jeffers 15-5 and 14-1. Payton Goldsworthy struck out 14 in the opener. Jovie Daniels had three hits, Clara Colombe had two, and Alli Corrigan hit a triple. Ashlyn Steves recorded nine strikeouts in the nightcap. Olivia Shank nearly hit for the cycle, with a single, two doubles and a home run. Kyara Mills had a single and a triple, and Daniels had a double. Meg Ruohonen homered for the Jets.

In softball today…
• Calumet entertains Negaunee, in a game that was rescheduled from May 7th.

At the Young’s Invitational golf meet in Iron River yesterday…
• Ontonagon won the girls competition, two strokes ahead of Calumet. Sam Bailey of the Gladiators medaled, with Calumet’s Lily Keranen and Maretta Kangas second and third. See full results here.
• Houghton took the boys title, two strokes ahead of Negaunee. Calumet was third, Hancock fourth, Ontonagon fifth, Lake Linden-Hubbell seventh and Dollar Bay-Tamarack City ninth. Brendan Jukuri from the Gremlins and Jackson Sintkowski from the Bulldogs tied for third individually. Houghton’s Connor Leonard was fifth. See full results here.

At the Division I regional track meet at Negaunee yesterday…
• Houghton placed second to Kingsford on the boys side. Calumet was fifth. Luke Hill of the Gremlins took the 800, 1600 and 3200-meter runs. Brody Mattila won the 110 and 300-meter hurdles and the long jump. Illya Velat and Wade Zadorecky tied for first in the pole vault.
• Houghton finished a distant second to Negaunee in the girls competition. Calumet was third. Tessa Rautiola of the Gremlins claimed the 1600 and 3200-meter runs. Caitlyn Strom of the Copper Kings won the 100-meter dash, and Jackie Kiilunen won the shot put.

• The Division III regional meet at Lake Linden has been postponed to Monday because of the weather. Monday’s Copper Mountain Conference meet has been pushed back to Wednesday.
• Hancock and Jeffers will compete at the Division II regional at Ishpeming.

College Hockey

St. Thomas’ tenure in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association will be a short one. The Tommies joined the conference after moving from Division III to Division I in 2021. They will play two more seasons in the CCHA, then join the National Collegiate Hockey Conference for the 2026-2027 season. School officials say the move will fit them better geographically. Three NCHC teams also compete with St. Thomas in the Summit League in other sports.

NHL

In second-round NHL tournament play last night…
• The Avalanche dimmed the Stars 5-3. Dallas leads that Western Conference series 3-2.

Tonight…
• The Hurricanes host the Rangers. New York leads that Eastern Conference series 3-2.
• The Canucks welcome the Oilers. That Western Conference set is tied 2-2.

NBA

In NBA Conference semifinal play last evening…
• The Celtics dispatched the Cavaliers 113-98. Boston wins that Eastern Conference series 4-1.
• The Mavericks stopped the Thunder 104-92. Dallas takes a 3-2 lead in that Western Conference series.

Tonight…
• The Timberwolves entertain the Nuggets. Denver has a 3-2 lead in that Western Conference set.

MLB

The Tigers suffered their second straight shutout yesterday, 2-0 to the Marlins. Casey Mize gave up a two-run homer to Bryan De La Cruz in the first inning, then allowed no more hits through the sixth. The Tigers collected seven hits, including three by Carson Kelly, but their best scoring opportunities ended with strikeouts by Gio Urshela with the bases loaded in the third inning, and Riley Greene with runners at the corners in the ninth.

The Tigers have today off, and visit the Diamondbacks tomorrow. Tarik Skubal will start against Ryne Nelson. Coverage will begin at 9:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Brewers pummeled the Pirates 10-2 yesterday. The Crew got home runs from William Contreras, Gary Sánchez, Sal Frelick, Joey Ortiz and Jackson Chourio. Robert Gasser gave up a run over five innings, and earned the win.

The Brewers also have today off, and visit the Astros tomorrow. Freddy Peralta will start against Hunter Brown.

NFL

The NFL officially released the schedules for the 2024 season yesterday.

The Lions will open with a Sunday night game against the Rams September 8th. The Packers will begin their season at Philadelphia with a Friday night contest September 6th. The teams will face each other in week nine in Green Bay, and week 14 in Detroit.
