Hancock, Houghton Reach MacInnes Final – Thursday Sport Wrap

High School
Hancock and Houghton will play for the title in the 42nd MacInnes Holiday Tournament, following victories last night.

The first of last night’s semifinals was a defensive battle. Hancock managed only 12 shots on goal, but was still able to edge Howell 2-1. After a scoreless first period, the Highlanders took a brief lead in the second period. Bryan Lepisto tied the match for the Bulldogs a few minutes later. Brody Budweg scored the game-winner about two minutes into the third period. The Hancock defense held Howell to just three shots in the final frame. Dawson Kero made 14 saves to earn the win.

The second game was an offensive showcase, as Houghton outlasted Calumet 7-5. The Copper Kings led 3-2 at the end of the first period. The Gremlins forced a 4-4 tie at the end of two, and dominated the final period to earn the win. Ty Halonen and Taavi Rajala each scored two of the Gremlins’ final four goals.

Calumet will face Howell in the consolation match this evening at six at the MacInnes Student Ice Arena, while the Bulldogs and Gremlins will follow in the championship game. Hear both contests on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

Calumet freshman forward Gabe Coppo has been named the LTU Michigan North Division High School Player of the Week. Hancock forward Alex Nordstrom received Honorable Mention votes. The weekly statewide voting is coordinated by the hockey coaching staff at Lawrence Tech University. KBear 102 is a member of the voting panel.

In other hockey action, L’Anse entertains Cheboygan this afternoon at 5:00.

In girls basketball yesterday, Calumet fell to Sault Ste. Marie 45-32 in the consolation game at the Redette Shootout in Marquette. Marquette defeated Petoskey 55-36 in the championship game. See video highlights here.

NMU
The Northern Michigan University hockey team lost 5-2 to Cornell in the opening round of the Florida Classic yesterday. The Wildcats will face Merrimack in the consolation match this afternoon at 4:00.

MTU
The Michigan Tech hockey team begins play at the Great Lakes Invitational this afternoon. The Huskies will face the University of Michigan at 3:30. Michigan State will take on Western Michigan University at 7:00 in the other opening-round game.

Finlandia
The Finlandia men’s basketball team is in Green Bay for the Nicolet National Bank Holiday Tournament. The Lions will face St. Norbert in the second of two opening round games tonight. Wisconsin-Platteville and the University of Northwestern will meet in the first game.

The Detroit Pistons’ struggles returned last night, as they fell to the Milwaukee Bucks 119-94. The game was tight until midway through the second quarter, when the Bucks broke it open, and never trailed again. Tobias Harris led Detroit with 23 points and 12 rebounds. The Pistons travel to Atlanta to take on the Hawks tomorrow night.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings will skate at Ottawa tonight. Faceoff is at 8:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
