High School
In high school hockey last night…
– Hancock scored the first four goals of the game, and cruised to an 8-4 victory over Bay Port. Ted Randell tallied three of those early goals. Alex Nordstrom and Jacob Norkol each scored twice for the Bulldogs.
– Houghton defeated DePere 5-2.
– L’Anse got past Menominee 6-4.

This afternoon…
– Hancock hosts DePere. Our broadcast will begin around 12:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
– Houghton entertains Bay Port.

In boys high school basketball last night…
– L’Anse lost to Wakefield-Marenisco 72-59. Trevor Uren scored 16 for the Purple Hornets.
– Ewen-Trout Creek throttled Republic-Michigamme 69-27.
– Chassell downed Stephenson 69-59. Hunter Rautiola scored 29 points for the Panthers. See video highlights from the game here.

On the girls schedule tonight…
– Houghton bounced West Iron County 52-32.
– Lake Linden-Hubbell fell to Wakefield 55-41.
– Baraga edged Jeffers 47-46.
– Ontonagon shut down Bessemer 40-29.

Today, Hancock faces Elcho High School in a game that will be played at Phelps High School in Wisconsin.

MTU
Both Michigan Tech basketball teams entertain Saginaw Valley State today. The women’s game begins at 1:00, and the men’s game at 3:00.

The Tech hockey team has this weekend off.

NMU
Both Northern Michigan University hoops teams host Hillsdale today.

The Wildcats hockey team is off this weekend.

Finlandia
Both Finlandia University basketball teams were overpowered at the University of Northwestern Friday night. The women’s team scored just three points in the first quarter, and five in the second, and fell 71-59.  Brooke Turin led the Lions with 12 points, and Julia Daavettila added 10.

The men’s team trailed 51-17 at halftime, on the way to a 93-45 loss. Terrance Fuller and Marcus Geralds each scored 11. Both Lions teams play at North Central University this  afternoon.

The Finlandia women’s hockey team was shut out 11-0 at Adrian College Friday night. Those teams play in Adrian again tonight. The men’s team hosts the Milwaukee School of Engineering tonight at 7:30 and tomorrow afternoon at 2:15 (moved up from the original 4:00 start time) at the Houghton County Arena.

GLHL
The Calumet Wolverines outshot the Monroe Blues 60-39 Friday night, but lost the game 9-7. The Wolverines skate at Mosinee tonight.

The Portage Lake Pioneers host the Marquette Iron Rangers tonight at 7:30 at Dee Stadium.

Petr Mrazek needed just 19 saves to earn the shutout, as the Detroit Red Wings blanked the Buffalo Sabres 3-0 Friday night. The game was scoreless until Dylan Larkin found the net midway through the third period. Henrik Zetterberg added an insurance goal, and Luke Glendening found the empty net in the closing minute. The Red Wings host the Ducks tonight. Faceoff is at 7:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

The Wings placed forward Joakim Andersson on waivers yesterday. If no team claims him by noon today, he can be assigned to the Grand Rapids Griffins. The move gives Detroit the salary-cap space to recall a defenseman to fill in for Niklas Kronwall, who underwent arthroscopic knee surgery on Tuesday.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons face the Nuggets in Denver tonight. We’ll join the game after Red Wings hockey on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

NFL
The NFL Conference Championship games will be played tomorrow. New England plays at Denver at 3:05, and Arizona kicks off at Carolina at 6:40. Hear both games on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

Detroit Lions LionThe Detroit Lions’ makeover continues. Yesterday, senior vice president of football operations Cedric Saunders was fired after 10 years with the team. Earlier this week, the Lions also dismissed senior personnel executive Scott McEwen, who had been with team’s scouting department for 29 years. Coordinator of physical development Jason Arapoff and assistant strength coach Ted Rath were also let go. Meanwhile, running backs coach and run-game coordinator Curtis Modkins has been hired by San Francisco 49ers as their offensive coordinator.
