High School
Hancock spotted Sault Ste. Marie a 1-0 lead after the first period, then scored five straight times to bury the Blue Devils 5-2, and move into the semifinals of the state tournament. Danny Hill scored twice for the Bulldogs, and Alex Nordstrom, Jacob Norkol and Danny Tourtillot each found the net once. Dawson Kero stopped 14 shots in goal. The Bulldogs will face Cranbrook in the semifinals. The Cranes advanced with a 2-1 victory over Detroit Country Day. In boys high school basketball district play last night…
– In Class C, Calumet won the district title, with a 62-46 victory over L’Anse. The game was tied at eight at the end of the first period, but the Copper Kings used a flurry of three-point shots to build a 10-point halftime lead, and were never threatened after that. Unofficially, freshman Matthew Ojala led the Kings with 15 points. Jack Hyrkas added 13, and Cooper Twardzik scored a dozen. Logan Fish paced the Purple Hornets with 13 points.Calumet will take on either Westwood or Ishpeming in the regional semifinal Monday night at 5:00 at Escanaba. – In Class B, Houghton’s season ended with a 54-46 loss to Kingsford. Sean Hyslop of the Gremlins led all scorers with 28.
– In Class D at Lake Linden, Chassell eliminated Jeffers 73-61. Hunter Rautiola scored 22 for the Panthers. Lake Linden-Hubbell ousted Ontonagon 67-54. Arthur Lyons scored 28 for the Lakes. Chassell and Lake Linden will meet tomorrow night for the district title at 7:00 at Lake Linden.

In spring training baseball, Justin Verlander pitched three scoreless innings, as the Detroit Tigers defeated the Washington Nationals 11-5 yesterday. Ian Kinsler, Miguel Cabrera and Tyler Collins homered for Detroit. The Tigers face the Phillies this afternoon. Hear the first pitch at 1:05 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
The Milwaukee Brewers lost to the Kansas City Royals 7-5 yesterday. Wily Peralta gave up three runs, and didn’t make it through the second inning. The Brewers will take on the Giants this afternoon.
NFL
On the first day of the new NFL year yesterday, the Detroit Lions signed defensive tackle Haloti Ngata to a two-year contract. Terms were not disclosed. They also added former Bengals wide receiver Marvin Jones, to try to fill the gap left by the retirement of Calvin Johnson. It’s a five year, 40-million dollar deal, with the first two years and 17-million guaranteed. Former Lions safety Isa Abdul-Quddus signed with the Miami Dolphins.
The Green Bay Packers were not as busy, but did re-sign guard Lane Taylor.
