NFL – Packers Lose Game, Cobb
The Green Bay Packers lost to the Philadelphia Eagles 39-26 in preseason play last night. They also lost another receiver, when Randall Cobb injured his shoulder when he hit the turf trying to catch a pass on the Packers’ first possession. Cobb said he initially feared he had broken his collarbone, but an x-ray showed that was not the case. He’ll be examined again today, and it’s not known how long he’ll be sidelined. Green Bay lost receiver Jordy Nelson for the season in their previous exhibition game. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers did not play in last night’s contest. Rookie Brett Hundley completed 22 of 31 passes for 315 yards and two touchdowns. Philly starter Sam Bradford completed all 10 of the passes he threw for 121 yards and three touchdowns. High School – Hancock Routed
In high school football yesterday, the Hancock Bulldogs opened their season with a 48-7 loss to the Gogebic Miners. Hancock was hurt early by a couple of fumbles. The first came late in the first quarter, after the Bulldogs had stopped the Miners on a fourth down play deep in Hancock territory. Gogebic fell on a loose ball at the nine-yard line, and scored two plays later on a one-yard plunge by quarterback Tim Buerger. Late in the second quarter, with the Miners driving again, Hancock’s Jack Fenton recovered a fumble near the goal line. Once again, Hancock coughed it back up, and Buerger completed an eight-yard touchdown pass to Caleb Greenough make the score 16-0 at halftime. The floodgates opened on the second half kickoff, which Greenough returned 87 yards for a touchdown. He added a three-yard touchdown run in the closing seconds of the third quarter, and the rout was on. Hancock finally scored with 1:44 remaining, when Darren Nordstorm connected with Kyle LeClaire for a 36-yard TD strike. The Miners completed all six of their two-point conversion attempts.
