In girls high school basketball last night…
– Hancock trailed by two points at halftime, but came on strong in the second half, and defeated Houghton 72-56. Taylor Pertile led the Bulldogs with 20 points. Sloane Zenner of the Gremlins led all scorers with 31.
– Calumet shut down Chassell 61-17.
– Jeffers edged Lake Linden-Hubbell 50-47. Julia Nordstrom scored 16 for the Jets. Peyton Gast and Carli Ongie each scored 14 for the Lakes.
– Dollar Bay-Tamarack City defeated Baraga 51-39.
– L’Anse got past Ontonagon 54-51.
– Ewen-Trout Creek buried Republic-Michigamme 60-27.
In tonight’s only girls game, L’Anse hosts Wakefield-Marenisco.
On the boys hoops schedule tonight…
– Houghton visits Ontonagon.
– Calumet entertains Jeffers.
– Hancock hosts West Iron County.

In high school hockey, Hancock won its ninth game in a row, with a 4-2 victory over Jeffers. The Bulldogs outshot the Jets 31-15.

MTU
Michigan Tech women’s basketball player Danielle Blake has been named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference North Division Player of the Week. Blake scored 41 points in the Huskies’ wins over Hillsdale and Saginaw Valley State.
For the second week in a row, the Huskies’ hockey team is ranked 17th in the nation in the USCHO.com poll.
NHL
Petr Mrazek made 27 saves, as the Detroit Red Wings defeated the New York Islanders 4-2 last night. Brad Richards, Justin Abdelkader and Danny DeKeyser scored for Detroit, and Luke Glendening sealed the win with an empty-netter in the closing seconds. The Red Wings are off until next week, because of the All-Star break.
NBA
Reggie Jackson scored 29 points, as the Detroit Pistons held off the Utah Jazz 95-92 last night. Detroit took an early 10-point lead, and never trailed, despite a furious Utah comeback in the fourth quarter. The Pistons will host the Philadelphia 76ers tomorrow night. Tip-off is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
MLB
The Milwaukee Brewers have signed left-handed pitcher Chris Capuano to a minor-league contract. Capuano pitched for Milwaukee a decade ago, and made the all-Star team in 2006. He split time between the Yankees and their top farm club last season.
