Hancock Girls Stop Houghton – Tuesday Sports Wrap

High School
In high school girls basketball last night…
– Hancock shut down Houghton 46-28. Taylor Sebbas of the Bulldogs led all scorers with 16 points. Cassie Ryynanen scored 12 for the Gremlins.
– Calumet edged Chassell 39-37. Molly Larson scored 13 for the Copper Kings. Jenna Pietila led the Panthers with 16 points.
– Jeffers defeated Lake Linden-Hubbell 49-38.
– L’Anse outscored Ontonagon 56-44. Maija Rice led the Purple Hornets with 15 points. Holly Wardynski scored 13 for the Gladiators.
– Ewen-Trout Creek overpowered Republic-Michigamme 65-21.

In boys basketball this evening…
– Houghton entertains Marquette.
– Hancock travels to West Iron County.
– Calumet tips off at Jeffers.
– Lake Linden-Hubbell welcomes Ewen-Trout Creek.
– Chassell plays at L’Anse.

Kingsford High School hockey coach Dennis Murvich has resigned. Veteran assistant coach Greg Wadge will run the team for the rest of the season. No reason was given for the resignation.

The Hurley School District will change its mascot. In a unanimous vote last evening, the board of education decided to drop the “Midgets” nickname. In a written release, board members said they were concerned that use of a name which some feel is derogatory would distract students and the community. A district referendum on use of the name had been planned, but will be canceled. The process of choosing a new team name will begin later this year.

MTU
Former Michigan Tech hockey player Joel L’Esperance has been named to the Central Division roster for the 2019 American Hockey League All-Star Classic. L’Esperance plays for the Texas Stars, and leads all AHL rookies with 22 goals this season.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons couldn’t overcome a slow start, and lost to the Washington Capitals 101-87 yesterday afternoon. Blake Griffin had 29 points and nine rebounds. The Pistons visit the New Orleans Pelicans tomorrow night. Pregame coverage begins at 7:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

NHL

A day of fundraising activities to help pay for repairs to flood-damaged snowmobile and ATV trails has been scheduled for Saturday. A guided back country ride and a trail ride will start at 8:00 at the Range Lounge in South Range. The back country ride will be limited to 20 sleds, and the trail ride to 30 sleds. Each group will return to the Range Lounge between 3:00 and 4:00 pm. Between 8:00 pm and midnight, Tom Katalin and Highway 41 will perform during an evening fundraiser at the Range Lounge. Our Finlandia University athletics broadcasts continue this weekend, with two men’s hockey games. The Lions will host Trine University Friday – pregame coverage will begin at 6:55.
