Hancock Girls Come from 20 Behind to Stun Houghton – Tuesday Sports Wrap

High School

In girls high school basketball action last night…
• Hancock overcame a 20-point deficit to edge Houghton 47-45. The Bulldogs never led until the final minute. Meghan Trewhella scored 22 points for the Gremlins, 18 in the first half. Stella Wickstrom added 11. Bella Hebert led the Bulldogs with 20, and Kaisa Salani and Lana Aho each scored 11. Hancock improves to 17-1.
• Jeffers shut down L’Anse 40-24. Raena Kangas scored 20 for the Jets. Mylee Londo and Brooklyn Dompier each had eight for the Purple Hornets.
• Baraga outscored Chassell 59-29.

In boys play…
• Calumet scored just seven points in the first half, and fell to Ishpeming 63-37. Brayden Nelson led the Copper Kings with seven points.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell got past Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 58-51.
• Baraga downed Chassell 54-39.
• Jeffers shut down L’Anse 73-22. Levi Frahm had 27 points, and passed the 1,000 mark for his career. Matthew Schutz had 21, and Tavin Larson scored 12. Gavin Cadeau had 7 points for the Purple Hornets. The Jets improve to 18-1.

On the boys schedule tonight…
• Houghton plays at Lake Linden-Hubbell.
• Hancock travels to Republic-Michigamme.

In girls action this evening…
• Calumet welcomes Jeffers.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell visits Dollar Bay-Tamarack City.
• Ontonagon hosts Ironwood.

In a girls-boys doubleheader…
• Ewen-Trout Creek entertains Bessemer.

Houghton dominates the Great Lakes Hockey League all-conference awards. Camden Markham was named the Jim Crawford Player of the Year, and Corey Markham the Don Miller Coach of the Year. Marquette’s Cole Kelley was honored as the Rick Miller Rookie of the Year.

Members of the First Team include Landon Stevens, Gab Carlson and Connor Raffaelli of the Gremlins; goalie Aksel Loukus from Calumet, and Jacob Garrow and Colin Nemacheck from Marquette.

Second Team honorees include Houghton’s Mike Maillette; Marquette’s Nash Riipi, Cole Kelly and Joe DeMattia; and Gunner Bordeau and Sawyer LaMarch from Escanaba.

Honorable Mention votes went to Dan Loukus from Calumet, Bryce Hanner from Hancock, Sully Rajala from Houghton, Simon Rajala from Jeffers, Braydon Martineau from Escanaba, Isaiah Anderson from Kingsford, Ethan Phillips from Marquette, and Judge Anderson from Negaunee.

NHL

The Red Wings visit the Capitals tonight. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

Because of the all-star break, the Pistons are off until they visit the Magic Thursday night.
