Hancock Claims Copper Ball – Tuesday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school softball yesterday…
• Houghton swept Iron Mountain 16-1 and 17-2. The Gremlins made an opening statement by scoring 10 runs in the first inning of game one. Lexi Burns had three hits for the Gremlins, and Estella Soumis struck out six in a game that ended after three innings because of the mercy rule. Soumis, Kenzie Collard and Danielle Williston each had two hits. The story was much the same in game two, with Houghton plating nine runs in the first inning. Romi Mattson struck out six, and had two hits, including an inside-the-park home run. Clea Ollenkato also had two hits.
• Hancock claimed the Copper Ball with two wins over Calumet. The Bulldogs edged the Copper Kings 7-6 in eight innings in the opener. Sadie Biekkola struck out seven for the Bulldogs, Sofie Freeman had three hits, and Brooke Koskela added two. Lena Myhren struck out five for the Copper Kings, and Ryleigh Johnson and Bella Coppo each had two hits. Biekkola struck out seven in an 8-4 win in the nightcap. Myhren had three hits, and Audrey Erkkila and Bethany Garrow had two hits each for Calumet.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell swept L’Anse 14-3 and 14-4. Olivia Shank struck out 10, and earned the win in the opener. In the nightcap, Becca Lyons singled, tripled, and legged out an inside-the park home run. Shank and Alli Corrigan each had two hits.

In softball today, weather permitting…
• Calumet entertains Negaunee.

In baseball yesterday…
• Calumet v Gogebic – no report.
• L’Anse took two from Lake Linden-Hubbell, 9-2 and 12-11 in extra innings.

On today’s baseball schedule, weather permitting…

• Jeffers travels to Ontonagon.

NHL

In NHL second-round tournament play last evening…
• The Bruins buried the Panthers 5-1, to take a 1-0 lead in that series.

Tonight…
• The Rangers host the Hurricanes. New York leads that set 1-0.
• The Stars welcome the Avalanche in game one of that series.

NBA

In NBA play last night…
• The Knicks got past the Pacers 121-117. New York takes a 1-0 lead in that Eastern Conference semifinal.
• The Timberwolves shut down the Nuggets 106-80. Minnesota is up 2-0 in that Western Conference semifinal.

Tonight…
• The Celtics host the Cavaliers to open that Eastern Conference semifinal.
• The Thunder entertain the Mavericks in game one of their Western Conference semifinal.

MLB

The Tigers dropped their fourth straight game last night, 2-1 to the Guardians. Detroit claimed a quick lead when Riley Greene hit a leadoff homer, but Cleveland tied the contest in the bottom of the first inning, and scored the game-winner off Jack Flaherty in the sixth. Flaherty gave up six hits, and struck out six.

The Tigers visit the Guardians again tonight. Kenta Maeda will start against Logan Allen. Coverage will begin at 5:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Detroit is expected to send struggling center fielder Parker Meadows down to Toledo before tonight’s contest. He’s hitting .096. Ryan Vilade will be brought up.

The Brewers dropped their third straight contest, 3-2 to the Royals last evening. Gary Sánchez hit a two-run homer in the fourth-inning. Bryse Wilson gave up one hit over six shutout innings, but Kansas City plated three runs off Jared Koenig and Elvis Peguero in the seventh.

The Brewers visit the Royals again tonight. Colin Rae will pitch against Seth Lugo.

Milwaukee has brought pitcher Kevin Herget up from Nashville, and sent Janson Junk down. Freddy Peralta began a five-game suspension last night, for his role in the melee against the Royals last Tuesday.
