High School
It’s Hancock Bulldog Hockey Day in the City of Hancock today – officially proclaimed by Mayor Lisa McKenzie. Fans turned out yesterday afternoon to help the Bulldogs celebrate their first state championship since 1999. Hancock defeated Cranbrook 2-1 in overtime in the semifinals Friday afternoon, then downed Grand Rapids Catholic Central 4-2 in the title game on Saturday. Alex Nordstrom scored the game-winner on Friday, and had two goals in Saturday’s win. You can read the official Hancock proclamation here.

In the boys high school basketball tournament…
– Calumet will meet Westwood in the Class C regional semifinal this afternoon in Escanaba. The Patriots stunned Ishpeming 51-47 to win their district title Friday night. The game will tip off at 5:00. Our pregame coverage will begin around 4:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
– Lake Linden-Hubbell will face defending state champion North Central in the Class D regional semifinal tonight at 6:00 at Negaunee. The Lakes advanced with a 58-48 victory over Chassell Friday night. Lucas Klein scored 21 points for the Lakes.

MTU/NMU
The Michigan Tech hockey team advanced to the WCHA Final Five by defeating Alaska 5-3 Saturday night. The Huskies routed the Nanooks 7-1 on Friday.

The Northern Michigan University hockey team was eliminated from the WCHA tournament with a 5-2 loss at Ferris State Saturday night. The Wildcats lost the opening game of that best-of-three series 3-2 on Friday.

MTU will face Ferris in one of the WCHA semifinals Friday evening in Grand Rapids. Minnesota State will take on Bowling Green in the other.

GLHL
The Calumet Wolverines closed their regular season with a 5-2 loss to the Mosinee Papermakers Saturday night. On Friday, the Wolverines defeated the Eagle River Falcons 12-6. Eric Bausano had a hat trick in Friday’s game.

Cody Sivonen scored the game-winner with 30-seconds remaining, as the Portage Lake Pioneers edged the De Pere Deacons 6-5 Saturday night. Sivonen scored twice, and Ryan Sullivan had a hat trick and two assists. The result of the Pioneers’ game against the Mosinee Papermakers Friday night was not reported.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings lost 1-0 to the Toronto Maple Leafs last night. Toronto goalie Jonathan Bernier made 38 saves. Petr Mrazek stopped 26 shots for Detroit. The Wings will visit Philadelphia tomorrow night. Face-off is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons play at Washington tonight. Tip-off is at 8:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

MLB
In spring training baseball, the Detroit Tigers fell to the Pittsburgh Pirates 9-5 yesterday. Starter Matt Boyd was rocked for four runs in the third inning. Anthony Gose, Casey McGehee and Steven Moya homered for Detroit. The Tigers face the Mets this afternoon.

The Milwaukee Brewers edged Cleveland 5-4 yesterday. Starter Chase Anderson gave up all four Cleveland runs in the first inning. The Brewers will take on the Dodgers this afternoon.

NCAA
The field is set for the NCAA Division One men’s basketball tournament. Michigan State is the second seed in the Midwest Division, and will open against Middle Tennessee State on Friday afternoon. The University of Michigan did not earn a seeded position, but will face Tulsa Wednesday night in one of the four play-in games. Our coverage of the tournament begins Thursday on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
