MLB

The Tigers split their doubleheader against the Cardinals yesterday. Detroit dropped the opener 2-1. Riley Greene’s fourth-inning homer held up until Saint Louis scored twice off Shelby Miller in the top of the ninth. That spoiled a great start by Jack Flaherty, who pitched into the seventh, allowed just two hits, and struck out 14, including the first seven batter he faced. That tied a major league record. The Tigers’ bats woke up for an 11-6 victory in the nightcap. Greene homered again, and Wenceel Pérez hit two out. In a spot start, Matt Manning tossed four shutout innings, but left as the Cardinals scored five runs in the fifth.

The Brewers bombed the Rays 8-2 last night. Freddy Peralta pitched into the sixth, allowing two runs on just one hit. Willy Adames had four hits, including a home run. Brice Turang added three hits. It was a testy game, with Peralta ejected after umpires ruled he had thrown a pitch at Tampa Bay center fielder Jose Siri. Siri, Milwaukee pitcher Abner Uribe and manager Pat Murphy were also ejected in the consternation that followed, which led to a bench-clearing brawl.
