High School
The Copper Country’s final two remaining football playoff teams were eliminated with opening-round losses yesterday.
– Calumet fell to Traverse City St. Francis 28-6. The Copper Kings scored early on a four-yard drive after a blocked punt, but were held to just 44 yards of total offense – 41 in the first half.
– Hancock built an early lead, but Menominee scored 22 unanswered points to earn a 36-26 victory over the Bulldogs.
Finlandia
The Finlandia University women’s hockey team opened its season with a 3-1 loss at St. Catherine University yesterday afternoon. The Wildcats jumped ahead early, scoring early in the first period, and again early in the second. Natasha Kern got one back for the Lions early in the third period, but St. Catherine added an insurance marker in the closing minutes. Annah Smiddy stopped 55 shots to keep the Lions in the game.
The Finlandia men’s soccer team wrapped up its regular season with a 9-0 loss at Wheaton College yesterday. The Lions will open play in the American Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament Saturday against SUNY-Canton.
MTU
The Michigan Tech volleyball team downed Lake Superior State 3-1 (25-15, 25-18, 23-25, 25-16) yesterday afternoon. MacAulay Petersen recorded 15 kills, and Elle Heinonen had 22 digs. It was the seventh straight win for the Huskies.
The 16th-ranked MTU hockey team lost 5-3 at 12th-ranked Minnesota State last night. Tech struck early, with a Jake Jackson goal in the opening minute. The Mavericks scored twice to take the lead, but Jackson’s second goal of the evening tied the game, and Joel L’Esperance put Tech ahead with a score late in the second period. MSU put the game away with three goals in the third period. Patrick Munson took the loss in net, as the Huskies were outshot 39-19. Tech has lost three straight games.
The Tech football team broke its three-game losing streak with a 17-10 victory over Davenport University yesterday afternoon. The Huskies led 7-3 at halftime, thanks to an 18-yard touchdown pass to Kevin Kirkland from freshman quarterback Garrett Young, who made his first collegiate start. Davenport’s only touchdown of the game gave them a brief lead in the third quarter, but Eric Kostreva returned the ensuing kickoff 93 yards to put Tech on top for good. Young completed 11 of 21 passes for 92 yards.
NMU
The Northern Michigan University football team lost at 19th-ranked Grand Valley State 28-3 yesterday afternoon.
NHL
The Detroit Red Wings broke their six-game losing streak with a 3-2 shootout win over the Florida Panthers last night. Newly-signed Andreas Athanasious put Detroit up early with a first period goal. After the Panthers scored twice to take the lead, Gustav Nyquist tied the contest late in the second period. Nyquist also scored the game-winner in the shootout. Jimmy Howard made 44 saves to earn the win. The Wings host the Arizona Coyotes Tuesday night. Pregame will begin at 7:10 on 99.3 The Lift.
NBA
The Detroit Pistons overcame a 13-point deficit, and defeated the Los Angeles Clippers 95-87 last night. Andre Drummond led a balanced attack with 15 points and 17 rebounds. It was the first loss of the season for L-A. The Pistons face the Golden State Warriors in Oakland tonight.
MLB
The Los Angeles Dodgers downed the Houston Astros 6-2 last night, and tied the World Series at two wins per team. Game five will be played tonight in Houston.
NFL
The Detroit Lions will host the Pittsburgh Steelers tonight. Kickoff is at 8:30 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Green Bay Packers have the weekend off.
