High School

The U.P. Division I golf championships yesterday…
• At the Marquette Country Club, the Marquette boys took an easy team win, with Houghton 21 strokes back in second place. Brenden Jukuri of the Gremlins placed fourth individually, and Marino Pisani ninth. Calumet finished fifth, with Ben Anderson taking ninth place individually. The Baraga co-op finished 10th, led by a third-place individual finish by Cage Osterman. See full results here.
• At Wawanowin, the Escanaba girls earned a 22-stroke team victory over Kingsford. Calumet finished sixth, with Lily Keranen taking 11th place individually. Houghton came in seventh, led by Abigail Dart’s second-place finish. See full results here.

At the U.P. Division II golf championships at George Young’s course in Iron River yesterday…
• Hancock claimed the boys team title, 15 strokes better than Jeffers. For the Gremlins, Jackson Sintkowski placed second individually, Bryce Hanner fifth, and Kirby Storm sixth. For the Jets, Benton Rajala and Griffin Heinonen tied for seventh. See full results here.

The U.P. Division III championships will be staged today at Highland in Escanaba.

In non-tournament softball games yesterday…
• Hancock defeated Calumet 14-4. The Bulldogs broke the game open with an eight-run fifth inning. Ella Storm tripled for the Bulldogs and drove in four runs. Sydney Scholie got the win with three scoreless innings of relief. Kaydence Christopherson had two hits and drove in two runs for the Copper Kings.
• Houghton JV v Jeffers varsity – no report

Lake Linden-Hubbell dominated this year’s all-Copper Mountain Conference girls softball honors, announced yesterday. The Lakes were Team of the Year. Payton Goldsworthy was named Player of the Year and Pitcher of the Year – and she’s just an eighth-grader. Local players on the all-conference first team include Olivia Shank, Marissa Sullivan, Becca Lyons and Allie Corrigan of the Lakes, Jaydlyn Goyen and Keira Dakota from L’Anse, and Meg Ruohonen from Jeffers. Honorable Mention votes went to Clara Colombe of Lake Linden-Hubbell, Lola Cichosz of L’Anse, and Aya Keteri, Naomi Frahm and Gracie Moyle of Jeffers. See full results here.

Jeffers swept the All-Copper Mountain Conference baseball top awards, The Jets were named Team of the Year, Levi Frahm was selected as Most Valuable Player and Top Pitcher, and Luke Paul was tabbed as Coach of the Year. Local members of the all-conference team include Cody Turner, Chase Kinnunen, Bryson Kangas and Trayton Helminen from the Jets, Logan Dusincki from L’Anse, Gabe Popko from Lake Linden-Hubbell, Easton LeGault from Ewen-Trout Creek, and Dyceson Drew from Ontonagon. Honorable Mention votes went to Luis Larson from Jeffers, Tyler Axford from Lake Linden-Hubbell, Trysten Muma from L’Anse, Thomas Logghe from Ewen-Trout Creek, and Ontonagon eighth-grader Nick Amos. The Oilers outskated the Stars 5-2 last night, and tied the Western Conference championship series 2-2. Tonight, the Rangers host the Panthers. That Eastern Conference championship series is tied 2-2.

NBA

The Western Conference championship series continues tonight, as the Timberwolves host the Magic. Dallas leads that series 3-1.

MLB

The Tigers split their doubleheader with the Pirates yesterday. Tarik Skubal allowed just three hits over seven shutout innings, as Detroit took the opener 8-0. Matt Vierling belted a three-run homer. Keider Montero struggled on the mound as he made his major league debut in a 10-2 loss in the nightcap. Brought up from Toledo as the extra player for the doubleheader, Montero gave up four runs on five hits, and left in the fifth inning. Matt Vierling hit another home run.

The Tigers visit the Red Sox tonight. Jack Flaherty will pitch against Nick Pivetta. Coverage will begin at 6:55 on 99.3 The Lift.

Detroit has placed Kerry Carpenter on the injured list with a back issue. Akil Baddoo has been called up from Toledo.

The Brewers teed off on heralded Cubs starter Shota Imanaga, and earned a 10-6 victory last evening. Christian Yelich, Blake Perkins and Willy Adames homered. Imanaga gave up seven runs on eight hits before leaving in the fifth inning, and saw his season ERA jump up by a full run per game.

The Brewers host the Cubs again this afternoon. Colin Rae will start against Jameson Taillon.
