Hancock Boys Hoops Falls to Negaunee – Tuesday Sports Wrap

High School

In boys high school basketball last night…
• Calumet edged Bessemer 37-35.
• Hancock lost to Negaunee 43-24.

The Dollar Bay-Tamarack City boys and girls games at Wakefield-Marenisco were postponed. No make-up dates have been announced.

In boys action tonight…
• Houghton travels to West Iron County.

On the girls schedule…
• Houghton plays at Calumet. Coverage will begin around 7:00 on 97.7 The Wolf.
• Chassell entertains Bessemer.
• The Ontonagon at Lake Linden-Hubbell game has been postponed – no make-up date has been announced. Because of the postponement, the Ontonagon girls team will play at Hancock this evening – varsity only – with tip-off at 5:00.

In double-header action…
• Both Baraga teams play at Ewen-Trout Creek, with the girls game starting at 6:00.
• Both Jeffers games at Watersmeet have been postponed – no make-up date has been announced.

In high school hockey…
• The Calumet game at Jeffers has been postponed – no make-up date has been announced.

College Hockey

Michigan Tech’s Blake Pietila has been named the Central Collegiate Hockey Association Goaltender of the Week. Pietila turned in two shutouts, as the Huskies swept Lake Superior State last weekend. It’s his second such honor this season.

The Huskies are ranked 17th in this week’s DCU/USCHO.com national poll. Quinnipiac has taken over the top spot in the survey. After splitting with Northern Michigan tis pas weekend, Minnesota State falls to number-two. Michigan and Western Michigan are third and fourth. Northern breaks into the top-20, at number-19.

College Basketball

Alex Rondorf of the Huskies has been named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference North Division Women’s Basketball Player of the Week. Rondorf matched her career high of 21 points in Tech’s win over Wayne State.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings edged the Buffalo Sabres 3-2 in overtime yesterday. Dylan Larkin’s 17th goal of the season midway through the third period forced extra time, and his 18th goal of the season two minutes into the extra stanza was the game-winner. Alex Nedeljkovic made 26 saves.

The Wings’ scheduled game at Philadelphia tonight has been postponed. Detroit will return to the ice Friday at home against the Dallas Stars. Coverage will begin at 7:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons visit the Golden State Warriors tonight. Coverage will begin at 9:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

Detroit star Jerami Grant has been assigned to the Motor City Cruise for a rehab stint. He’s missed the last month after surgery to repair a thumb ligament. Kelly Olynyk is working out with the team after missing two months because of a sprained knee. He could return to the lineup as early as this weekend.

NFL

In the NFL playoffs last night…
• The Los Angeles Rams dismantled the Arizona Cardinals 34-11. Matthew Stafford threw two touchdown passes, and earned his first career playoff victory.

The schedule for the divisional round this coming weekend…
• On Saturday, the Cincinnati Bengals visit the Tennessee Titans for a 4:30 game. The Green Bay Packers host the San Francisco 49ers in an 8:15 contest. Temperatures are expected to be in the upper teens, with a chance of snow showers.
• On Sunday, the Los Angeles Rams visit the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for a 3:00 kickoff. The Kansas City Chiefs host the Buffalo Bills in a 6:30 matchup.
