Hancock Baseball Wins Tourney Opener – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School

In Division Three opening-round baseball district tournament play yesterday…
• Calumet’s season ended with a 5-3 loss to Negaunee.
• Hancock trounced Westwood 13-1, in a four-inning mercy rule contest.

The district title will be decided Saturday at Houghton. The Bulldogs and Gremlins will meet in the first semifinal at 10:00. Coverage will begin at 9:45 on 97.7 The Wolf. The Miners will face Iron Mountain in the second semifinal at 12:30. The championship game will begin around 3:00, with the broadcast on 97.7 The Wolf.

In Division Four District 97 yesterday…
• L’Anse fell to Gogebic 5-1.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell lost to Ironwood 6-1.

The district title will be decided Friday at Jeffers. The Jets will face the Red Devils at 11:00 in the first semifinal. The Miners will take on Ontonagon in the second semifinal. The championship game will begin around 4:00.

In non-tournament games…
• Houghton lost to Iron Mountain 5-0 – Niko Burgoon tossed a no-hitter for the Mountaineers.
• Ontonagon v Ewen-Trout Creek – no report.

In non-tournament softball games yesterday…
• Houghton took two from Ishpeming, 8-2 and 14-5. Estella Soumis struck out six and earned the win in game one. Jacey Sleeman and Delaney Salmi each had two hits and three RBI. Romi Mattson and Reagan Moyle combined to strike out seven in game two. Brynn Arko and Kenzie Collard each drove in two runs.
• Calumet fell to Negaunee 16-0.
• L’Anse lost to the Westwood JV 21-11.

In non-tournament softball games today…
• Calumet plays at Hancock – one game with a 4:30 start.
• Jeffers hosts the Houghton JV.

At the Dan Juntilla Memorial Track Meet at Houghton yesterday, the Gremlins won both team titles.
• On the boys side, Negaunee was a distant second. Dollar Bay-Tamarack City was third, followed by Calumet, Hancock, Chassell and Jeffers. Eight different Gremlins won individual events.
• On the girls side, Calumet finished a close second. Negaunee was third, followed by West Iron County, Dollar Bay-Tamarack City, Hancock, Chassell and Jeffers. Danica Shamion of the Wykons took the 100, 200 and 400-meter dashes, and the high jump.

The U.P. Division I golf championships will be held today at Wawanowin. The Division II championships will be staged at George Young’s course in Iron River. The Division III tournament will be held tomorrow.

NHL

Sam Reinhart’s overtime goal gave the Panthers a 3-2 win over the Rangers last night. That Eastern Conference championship series is tied 2-2, and will continue tomorrow in New York.

The Oilers host the Stars tonight. Dallas leads the Western Conference championship series 2-1.

NBA

In the NBA tournament, the Timberwolves remained alive in the Western Conference championship series with a 105-100 victory over the Mavericks last evening. Dallas holds a 3-1 lead in that set, which continues in Minnesota tomorrow night.

MLB

The Tigers and Pirates were rained out last night. That game will be made up as part of a straight double-header this afternoon. Coverage will begin at 12:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Cubs scored five runs in the top of the 10th inning, and held on to beat the Brewers 6-3 last evening. Chicago took a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the ninth, but Willy Adames singled home Christian Yelich on a disputed play to force extra innings. The Cubs’ top-of-the-10th outburst came against Trevor Magill and Hoby Milner. Milwaukee plated two in the bottom of the 10th, but couldn’t complete the comeback.

Magill left the game after he was hit on the elbow by a batted ball. Fortunately, manager Pat Murphy confirmed after the game that he did not suffer a fracture.

The Brewers host the Cubs again tonight. Bryse Wilson will start against Shota Imanaga, who enters the game with a miniscule ERA of 0.84.

Horseshoes

In Copper Country Horseshoe League play last night…
• Calumet One shut out Maple Leaf 9-0.
• Harter’s Party Store stopped Calumet Electronics 9-0.
• Dreamland One blanked Ahmeek Fire Department 9-0.
• Luigi’s stifled L and L 9-0.
• Bucko’s Party Store got past Houghton Building Supply 6-3.
• Eva’s Hideaway edged Mohawk Superette 5-4.
